Suddenly all I see when I try to play movies is a black screen, although the sound is fine. It is the same whether the format is .mpg, .avi, or .wmv. QuickTime plays its .mov files just fine. My version of Windows Media Player is 9.0 but the problem exists for all my other multi-media players such as ThumbsUp.
Sorry, I meant to say are you having this problem with movies that use to work fine or did you just get a new movie and it shows nothing but a black screen. If it’s the latter, then your missing some video codecs. If it’s the former, then I’ll need more information such as did you recently install any new software?
By “suddenly” I mean that 4 or 5 days ago everything worked fine, and today nothin’. I hadn’t tried to play anything until today when everything was black.
Here’s what’s really wierd. I downloaded DivX and tried playing stuff on that but had the same problem except that .WMV files worked. So I go back to Windows Media Player to see if they work there, and sure enough they do. So I see what other formats WMP will play and I notice that they now play .MPGs but not .AVIs. I go back to DivX and - by God - all formats are now working. So I try WMP again and all formats including .AVI work.
I’ve never seen a computer problem fix itself incrementally like that.
