MeTV is showing “Wings,” which in my opinion was a seriously under-rated show. But that is beside the point. My question: We know that Sandpiper flew a beat-up Cessna 402. But what the hell did AeroMass fly? They show a shot of a high-wing, two-engined plane off-loading passengers, with a set of 6-bladed props. What the hell is that plane?
A Fokker 50?
I don’t think so. The plane in the shot was very “boxy.” Moreso than the Fokker.
I don’t recall seeing an Aeromass plane on the show, but “high-wing” and “boxy” make me think it may have been something from Short, possibly a 360.
Hmm, I checked the Internet Movie Planes Database and a search on “Wings” only returns the 1927 movie.
At 8:07 here, if it’s any help.
Yeah, sure looks like a Short 360 to me. I can’t find any head-on pictures to match the angle from the video, but a lot of it seems to match; low nose, fuselage cross-section, landing gear fairings, wing struts, windshield framing. Too much light reflecting to see if the one in the video has the eyebrow windows, but I think we’re close enough.
I agree. One more niggling little question checked off my list. Thanks!
For comparison, the Short 360-300.
From the paint scheme, the specific plane might have belonged to Business Express Airlines, (1982-2000).
My memory is probably failing me but I seem to recall AeroMass ran multiple (seven or more) aircraft which may or may not have all the same type.
Well, you almost never saw them (but for the one shot in this thread, I would have assumed we never had). They were occasionally referenced when Roy (the owner of AeroMass) boasted how he had seven planes to Sandpiper’s one, but I can’t recall him ever specifying the types.
He never said what planes Aeromass had, except the one time when he thought he got the gig as the “Official Airline of the Boston Celtics” and bought a 737 (long story).
I didn’t know Roy was the owner of AeroMass. Running a seven-plane airline is not a trivial undertaking. I’m surprised he had any time at all to be taking tickets and working the counter himself. Hell, even Joe had Fay to do that.
- Roy is a cheap-ass.
- He has hired help at the counter. He usually sits in the office and just comes out to announce flights and snark.
- What we don’t ever see is any of the pilots for AeroMass.
- For that matter, wouldn’t a 7 plane fleet require more than just a part-time mechanic/ground crew?
- Could Nantucket even support an 8 plane habit?
- Checking the data, I guess it could. Nantucket is 2nd behind Boston in number of enplanements, and more than twice as large as the 3rd and 4th place airports.
If I recall, Sandpiper was a one airplane, one route airline, while AeroMass had multiple routes, not just Nantucket-Boston.
Sandpiper flew 3 routes: Boston, Hyannis & Provincetown, and New Bedford & Martha’s Vineyard. Then a repeat to Boston.
Not just the number of planes, but the size. Wikipedia has a picture of an Embraer ERJ 190; that has about 100 seats.
JetBlue would squash AeroMass like a bug.
