I think the notion that “celebrities get off easy” is more perception than reality. The fact is that everybody gets off easy for non-violent offenses. Don’t think so? Go down to the courthouse and watch it happen.
The only time this doesn’t happen is when mandatory sentencing laws come into play. (Drug distribution cases.)
If anything, the pressure is on judges and prosecutors in celebrity cases to make sure that celebrities don’t get treated any differently.
The OJ case, by the way, is not an example of “celebrities getting off easy.” Rather, it is example of someone with a lot of money buying a good defense team. Wealth, not celebrity, made the difference there.
