Winston Roche is a WWI veteran who appears in several of The History Channel’s programmes. Aside from being a WWI veteran, who is he? What was his role in the war? Is he still alive?
He is a 94 y/o US citizen from dallas. link. Other than that, I would say this is a $20 dollar question on Google Answers. Someone has previously asked this same question on the history channel boards and received no reply. Not much info available on the guy online.
This seems like the kind of question that turns up in Parade Magazine. Maybe you should try there. (no offense!)
If the 94 year old age is correct and this really is a WWI vet then he must have been quite some guy in his youth.
I get 2005 - 94 = 1911 as his birth year.
That makes him 1917 - 1911 = 6 years old when the US entered WWII. I’m a little surprised his mother signed his enlistment papers.
that article is from 1993
I was able to find information through a library database.
According to it, Roche served in the Army as a combat engineer from 1917 to 1919.
He died on April 28, 1994, at the age of 95, in Los Angeles.
(BTW, the reference to Roche as being from Dallas is in error- all the references I’ve found to Roche identify him as a resident of North Hollywood.)
Well, that would explain it. I didn’t read the cite and the use of “is” a WWI veteran fooled me.
