Winter Holiday Digital Distribution Sales

We don’t need Steam to tells us how the sale did. Steamspy does that well enough:

  • Over 46 million game sales (only includes games with sales over 1,000 units, and no DLC or in game purchases)

  • Over $270 million in revenue.

  • Almost twice as much as the Summer sale.

Not sure if this should be in the XCOM II or the ongoing digital sale thread, but XCOM II is on sale (digital pre-order) for $31.70 at CDKeys.com. I am unfamiliar with that site, but my impression was that it was a bit sketchy compared to GMG or GOG. The only thing that reassures me a little is that this deal made the Slickdeals.net front page. Does anyone have any experience with CDKeys.com?

CDKeys is a reseller site. They’re not authorized by any publishers to sell keys, rather they buy them from “cheap” sources. Said sources can be semi-legitimate such as taking advantage of regional pricing and buying them super cheap in Russia to sell in the US or buying promo keys in bulk from sources who won’t use them (a custom computer shop buying in new video cards with free games). They can also be stolen or bought via some sort of fraud (stolen credit cards, hacked accounts, etc). Publishers have, on rare occasions, revoked keys sold through unauthorized parties before. It could also be revoked if it was bought via fraud and someone disputed their charges, for example.

It will probably be safe. It has a greater risk of not being safe than using an authorized merchant. Worst that would happen to you is getting your key revoked and having to fight for a refund or new key – Steam won’t ban your account or anything.

Not a digital deal, but Dying Light (PC) is on clearance at Best Buy for $11.99

Every BB in my area shows it as in stock for the PC so it should be relatively easy to find and avoid the couple bucks shipping if you’re interested.

I don’t think I’ve actually bought a physical copy of a game in the last decade. I’d feel weird about it.

Just checked. I think the last physical purchase I made was TBC for WoW which was apparently January 2007. So not quite a decade.

I’ve bought a couple, rarely, when the physical version goes on a clearance. Usually digital deals are cheaper but sometimes a store just wants to get them off the shelf.

Still sounds kind of shady and I’m not sure I want to support that. Thanks for the info!

Boxed PC copy of Fallout 4 is $35 at Amazon right now (no idea how plentiful stock is)

I bought two cd keys for heroes of might and magic 7 from them recently and one of them did not have an english install option. They did give me a new one after i complained though.
