Wireless Access for laptop

my birthday was thursday, and one of my gifts was a Dell Inspiron 1000. is there any way i can get it to have wireless internet access or must i split my cable wire and hook it up with a modem (if so, how do i do that as well)?

thanks in advance

Jason

Mine is done via a wireless ADSL router and a PCMCIA card for the laptop (actually my laptop has an internal wireless ‘card’ but my step-dad’s laptop uses the PCMCIA card)
I’ve a friend who does it a different way. He has two wireless usb adapters and his laptop acccesses the internet via internet connection sharing on his desktop. So his desktop has to be on.

I don’t know anything about that laptop. If it has a built in wireless card, you’ll just need a wireless router. Otherwise you can get a wireless network PC card and a wireless router. The very general directions for what you would need to do is…get a wireless router (that can handle wired as well). Run a wire from the modem to the router, then from the router to the wired computer (probably the one your using right now). Then get a wireless PC card for the laptop and go from there. Every router is different (all though fairly similar). Your best bet would be to find a friend to help explain how to hook it up, or to come over and hook it up for you. They can be quite tricky and just plain won’t work if all the settings arn’t just right. But generally once you got it working, you won’t need to touch it at all anymore.
