Wireless Networking Solutions Needed

Crap. I was logged in as my dad.

Oh, hey! What’s that?

Ah…sorry, thought you had your answer. Ok, so the DSL Modem has a line in and an ethernet line out…and you have your WAP hooked up to the ethernet line out I assume. Did you go on the WAP and see if it was picking up a DHCP address scheme from the DSL Modem? If it is, did you go on your workstations hooked up either straight into your WAP (I assume it has a few RJ-45 ethernet ports in back) or via wireless to see if you are getting DHCP from it?

Once again…in English, please. Um, the lights are blinking. All the lights that are supposed to be blinking are blinking, too. The card in the laptop is blinking in the appropriate places as well.

My guess is that it’s in the setup for the router. Do routers usually come with a setup function?

(WAP is the wireless router, correct?)

How would I find out if it’s picking up a DCHP address?

The computer tells me that the problem is that it can’t configure an IP address (those might not be the exact words). The other computers don’t talk to the router, either, which makes me think that it’s the router or the configuration.

Mr. Ebayer, you gets no feedback until I can figure this shit out.

:smack: Sorry, I made some assumptions on your technical skills. My apologies.

Hm…ok. I will assume you are using some variant of Windows. If you are using Apple then you need to have someone else help you. If its UNIX (I assume not) then let me know and I’ll walk you through that.

Open up a command prompt. Do this by clicking on Start, then Run. In the window that pops up type in ‘cmd’. This will pop up a command prompt (basically a windowed dos prompt). At the prompt type in ‘ipconfig /all’. This will bring up your computers IP configuration. Its going to have a bunch of information in there, but what you are looking for is the IP Address, Default Gateway and DHCP/DNS Server addresses. The IP address SHOULD be something like 192.168.0.XXX (and the Subnet Mask SHOULD be something like 255.255.255.0). The important address though is the Default Gateway/DHCP/DNS Server addresses…they should all be the same. They SHOULD be something like 192.168.0.1 (the first 3 octets…er, the first three numbers between the periods that is should be the same as the first three of your IP Address).

Ok, assuming all this is right, then what you need to do is type ‘ping’ followed by whatever that address for the Default Gateway/DHCP/DNS Server is. So, if it was in fact 192.168.0.1, you would type in ‘ping 192.168.0.1’ and hit return. You SHOULD get a message basically saying ‘Reply From 192.168.0.1’ followed by some information that you can disreguard as it will be meaningless to you. If you get that then this is a good thing…it means your PC is able to talk to your WAP (yes, this is the wireless router btw…just short hand for Wireless Access Point, the term usually used for these things, least in my own circles). If you instead get something like ‘Request Timed Out’ or ‘Destination Unreachable’ then you have connectivity issues…could be addressing or could be something else (probably addressing though).

Ok, assuming you were able to ping the device and all that is working fine, open up whatever browser you are using to connect to the internet with (could be Windows IE or Firefox or whatever). In the address field type in http://192.168.0.1 (this is only an example…put whatever the address of your Default Gateway in there if its different) and hit return. This SHOULD put you into your WAP’s configuration menu (I’ve never used that particular device…I assume however it has an HTTP interface. Most of the new ones do). At this point you will probably want to go online to the makers web site and see if they have online documentation…or maybe someone else who has your device will come on and walk you through looking over the configuration. What you are looking for is the WAN interface settings to see if its set up for a static address (i.e. one you put in yourself manually) or if its set to accept a DHCP address (one you get automatically from the provider). If its set to DHCP then you will probably want to see if it will show you what addressing it currently has.

One final thought (I know this post is getting to be a book…I’m trying to cut it short as much as possible :))…its possible that the previous owner had configured the thing for his own situation and sent it to you as it was without re-setting the thing to Factory Default. The first thing I’d do when I got on the vendors website (I think you said it was a D-Link) would be to find out how to reset the thing to the factory default. Do that first and see if it all starts working after that.

Hopefully the above book will get you started. I’m sorry for the overly technical post before. Sometimes I forget that some people don’t do this stuff every day. :stuck_out_tongue:

I reset the modem. The laptop says I’m “connected” to the Internets, yet, it doesn’t work. They’re both talking, except it seems to be in different languages.

Harumph. I think I’m sieging the Internets with onagers.

Whoops, wrong thread. Thought we were working on Total War still.

You try any of that stuff I posted above? Being ‘connected’ with your wireless doesn’t really help you if your addressing is screwy…which is my guess what your problem is. Either your laptop isn’t getting a correct DHCP address (or isn’t getting any at all), or your wireless router isn’t getting addressing information from the provider (perhaps its set to a static address by the previous owner).

If you aren’t up for trying out the stuff above, my suggestion is to call the manufacturer of the wireless modem, ask for their tech support and have them walk you through the process of checking out the configuration and getting the thing to work.

Sorry I couldn’t be more help. :frowning:

p.s. Love that Total War thread.

It’s okay. I bet it’s my own idiocy on the subject that’s the real barricade. I think I may try tech support tomorrow and prepare to cry for a few hours.

I can finish taking over the universe, or at least Turkey, while I’m on hold.

Dad has managed to not be able to hold onto Egypt, after starting as Egypt. He’s got a gift.

lol…well, good luck. Post how it goes if you like.
