Growing up near Appleton I always heard that John Bradley was one of the flag raisers. After investigation it turns out he was not in the famous photo:
To be clear:
Bradley risked his life under fire to save the life of a Marine at the base of the mountain who was caught in the open under heavy Japanese fire. While still under and exposed to enemy fire, and in order to save the lives of other Marines who were willing to expose themselves under fire to bring back the wounded Marine, Bradley brought the wounded Marine to safety himself. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions.
What annoys the snot out of me is that HLN Morning Express keeps referring to the flag-raising by “members of the US military.” THEY’RE FUCKING UNITED STATES MARINES, God-dammit! Not members of some lesser branch. Give them the respect they deserve.
Often the medics serving with Marine Units are actually Navy Corpsmen.
That’s no doubt why they used the more general term.
And cracks about “some lesser branch” are not appreciated. My father was in the US Navy at Iwo Jima. (In fact, he served on the ship where the photo was developed.)
