A regular clove from the kitchen (the spice, not a section of a garlic bulb) pressed between the gum and cheek works well too. I think it works by overwhelming your pain response with the taste.
Keep in mind, too, in some folks the pain is quite minor. I had four taken at once, two of them impacted, “twilight” anaesthesia. And the pain was really almost nonexistant. What little pain there was seemed to be more due to the pressure I was exerting with my jaws to keep the cotton in place. I ended up taking two vicodin altogether, and then just occasional ibuprofen after that.
