with respect to rap music...

Biggirl, did you ever see Kool Herc and them? Talk about a living link to hiphop history; how cool would that be? Tell us all about it, please!

You wanna talk about clueless? There I was, right in the middle of it and didn’t realize it was the start of a whole new thang. It was just. . . normal. We’d hear that someone was setting up turntables at Echo Park or Mt. Eden or Crotona and we’d get up and go. It was what you did on a summer weekend.

Guys–it was always guys-- would set up speakers out of their apartment windows and start scratching. It really didn’t seem special, more like an outgrowth of when the older guys would drag out their congas, cowbells and bongos and start playing salsa.

You mean she’s BLACK!?!?!

What’s next? Jews?

oy!

[sub]miss creant, who is of course, Jewish[/sub];j

Looks like on the official “We hate the MeanOldBroad” board, everyone seems to think I’m some sort of racist asshole. That contention is only half correct. I’m no racist, I also happen to be “colored.” I just used the term b/c that’s the one Lux used.

That seems only just, MeanOldLady, you didn’t introduce the term “colored” to this thread. But it might be worth noting that matters of opinion cannot be equated with matters of fact - whether you like Nelly, Air Supply, Tom Jones or Slipknot doesn’t make any difference in this forum. I suggest you think twice before you post next - you’re coming across as a tad, shall we say, edgy.

Keep in mind that all popular music has devolved into crap these days, no matter what genre.

Yep, you’re right. If it’s popular it must be crap.

Christ, you people sound like may pals in 1981 arguing what ‘real’ Punk was and whether it was possible for a punk band to be popular.

Give it a rest…whether it’s punk or ska or hip hop or whatnot…you’re singing the 200th verse of the same song.

Sheesh Jonathan, you sound like an old man. Next thing we know you’re telling us Rush sold out.

Ooohh… Slipknot.

To the OP (I know, he’s probably long gone by now), why don’t you own the Marshall Mathers LP? It’s just odd you would own the first and third, but not the second.

I would like, at the risk of disappearing up my own fundament, to point out that I used the term “people of color” rather than “colored people.” A subtle, hair-splitting distinction of denotation, but a bit more significantly different in connotation. I mention it only 'cause I’m the whitest white kid ever to slather on the SPF 4 million, and I don’t want them to revoke my membership in the Progressive Humanist Hand-Holding Sing-Along Party for a Future Full of Rainbows and Kittens.

And MeanOldLady, I don’t hate ya. I just thought you were being a bit ridiculous with Biggirl, whom I’ve met, and of whom I’m a giant fan.

Right. Um. Busta Rhymes sucks since he left Leaders of the New School!

Thank GOD! someone has the same opinion as me, hooray! I’m not alone anymore, anyway Nelly is seriously overrated and his song with Kelly Rowland was repeated over and over and was just awful.
Jusitn Timberlake needs a kick in his ‘Pepsi-Presents’ face, I like Eminem in one track and that was when he sung with Dr Dre, who I think is great.
Hype plays a main factor in these ‘contreversal’ groups or solo artists, and when it fades you uncover what they really are, either teeny boppers or manufactured bands.

Are you people just realizing this?

Lemme give you a tip…anyone who records on a major label is ‘manufactured’. If the label didn’t think they were worth the investment they wouldn’t be selling their music.

Damn, Coldfire, I am old, ain’t I?

And careful how you speak of Rush, silly Dutchman.

Yay! Ryan, you’re a good kid. I also agree with anyone who says popular = garbage. Oh no, am I going to be jumped all over for calling someone else’s taste in music crap? Well gah, I think it’s trash and I hate it. Sue me.

Okay, this confuses me.

Lets just say that I like such bands as *Nsync, O-Town…Etc

Does that make me some kind of mindless drone because I enjoy fun music that you can usually dance to and concerts that I can take my 10 year old cousin to without hearing a curse word ?

Does that make me a garbage person in Meanoldlady’s eyes?

No, Flower, it just means I think the music you listen to is garbage. I don’t know where you people get the idea that I give a shit about what you listen to. I really don’t. I just don’t particularly care for the music, and that’s it. Jesus H. Christ…

Roll your eyes all you want–that statement is total bullshit. What if Talib Kweli became popular? To me, what you just said is more of a statement on how you want to be perceived, not about the type of music you like. Would you automatically start hating someone who became popular just because they got mainstream acceptance? Lame.

Kweli would never become popular. There are rules against that kind of thing. Radio stations and MTV don’t want to play music that gets too introspective, philsophical and/or political. They’re trying to make ca$h. Teeny boppers buy CDs and teeny boppers like the Backstreet Boys. That is not my point about popular = trash. If Kweli got (commercial) success, I’d very VERY DAMN surprised… but of course, that will never EVER happen. If he wants to blow up, he’d better don a shiny suit and start dancing around like Puff Daddy or P. Diddy or just plain Diddy or whatever the hell that man is calling himself these days.

Maybe I wasn’t clear. I don’t mean to say so-and-so is popular and is therefore trash. I mean the fact that popular music is nonsense is no coincidence. Someone making conscious hip hop is not going to blow up, it’s not marketable.

I knew you were going to say that. I call bullshit again. There are plenty of popular socially conscious groups. So political music never gets any play? Ever heard of Rage Against the Machine or Arrested Development, since we’re on rap?

And care to answer my other question without copping out? Would you reject an artist you liked if they got mainstream acceptance?
