Pure unadulterated class A bullshit - you have been good at using weasal words - but as a sect, you have set plenty of dates either directly or thru the use of all kinds of examples that can be read as nothing but.
Even more so - the recent change in the definition for ‘generation’ - as in- up until it became obvious that the end was not going to come in the timeframe of the ‘generation of 1914’ - you had to change it to be ‘any generaation’ or ‘the generation that was alive tat the begninning of the end’
You are a member of an apocalyptic cult that REQUIRES the ‘end be any day now’ in order to hold your membership.
When they try to get fancy and use translators to back their claim about Greek - they mis-quote them and have no backing - dougie and I had quite a conversation on this in a thread a few years past - referenced again recently in a thread with raindog where he claimed the SMDB couldnt handle the “complexity of the translation”
It’s another stupid cult that deserves all the contempt it gets. Most of humanity’s problems are caused by the belief that all problems can be solved and all questions answered if only you read one of a handful of books written by sexist morons a few centuries ago. The Torah / Koran / Bible – the older I get the more I think anyone who take such ridiculous books seriously should be exiled from civilized society for the good of the rest of us.
I ran into a word a few days ago that best describes this view. The iron clad belief that most problems stem from religion. It describes the refusal to just say “fuck it, whatever” and live and let live. It’s the belief that the world would be a better place if people just think like you do.
OOO! Fun! Let’s personify your angst and umbrage at JW’s by assigning the negativity to Me, Uber_The_Goober by use of the specific pronoun “YOU”. Totes legit.
Anyway, it’s interesting that there’s so much outrage towards the JW’s. So much anger and hatred, unjustified when looking at facts. Physical violence, iniquitous application of ham-fisted laws with the intent of stopping our worship, etc.
Let’s just get one thing straight here. There’s lots of “cults” and “sects of christianity” out there. All have a level of hypocrisy, all have a level of “you were wrong about XYZ”, all are viewed by some as illegitimate and wrong.
Name another one that receives the level of hatred that JW’s do. It really makes you wonder. If you tell your jewish (or whatever religion) parents that you’ve decided to become a catholic, or a protestant, or a buddhist, or a hindu, you can imagine the reaction. If you tell your parents that you’re becoming a JW…now that’s another story altogether.
Seriously. Where does it come from? Are you able to stop for just a moment, in the privacy of your own home, away from anyone judging you for not conforming to the hatred, and ask yourself “Why? Why do I feel this way about them, and not so much about the sham* faith healers*? Why not be this angry at the homeopathic woo doctors? Why not be this angry at the catholic priests?” Then ask yourself if it’s not just a personal prejudice based on something that happened to you, or a story you heard, or a report of something bad. It’s like everyone just resigns themselves to the notion that catholic priests are bad, and no longer worthy of such intense vilification. Homeopathic sugar pill pushing chiropractors are bad, but we’re worn out on that anger. Faith healers may indeed be stealing millions of dollars from disadvantaged people, but ya know, I just can’t be arsed to get angry about it anymore.
“But those witnesses, they come to my house! And so, because they entered my personal sphere, I’m going to get extra mad. I’m going to do RESEARCH, and find like minded people to get angry with me.” Never mind the genocide in Africa. Never mind the poaching in India that will extinct the tigers. Never mind the drug cartels in Mexico. Those witnesses, man, they’re just awful.
Get some perspective people. For reals. If I believe in crazy nonsense, fine. But until you can show me that the pursuit of happiness of myself and my family is in jeopardy, then you’re the one who’s out of bounds. We’re perfectly happy. And we’d love to show you why we’re happy. You don’t want to hear about it, fine. No gunshots required.
Try to analyze your visceral reactions to the presence of JW’s, and ask yourself where it’s coming from, and whether your increased blood pressure/stress levels/etc. wouldn’t be better spent on something more worthwhile.
The world would be a better place if people who are worse as a result of religious belief would just go away. This includes the fucking Haredim who chase after little girls because they aren’t wearing enough clothing. It includes the jackass priests who declare fetuses sacred but argue that actual grown women can drop dead from an ectopic pregnancy. It includes Islamic morons who argue that it is okay to marry ten year olds. It most certainly includes Evangelicals who spread hatred against gay people and call for an American theocracy.
And it sure as hell includes idiots like JWs who argue against blood transfusions and abortions to save a woman’s life.
We need to divorce morality from religion as the two are very often utterly incompatible.
Apparently you’re wrong about what you believe (or at least the tenets of your faith), since, as has already been pointed out, the world was supposed to end (and usher in Christ’s “thousand-year Kingdom”) in both 1914 and 1925.
You said ‘we’ - therefore ‘you’ as in ‘you the JW’ is appropriate - and not one BIT of that response deals with the facts of your uttered bullshit which it is a supposed response to.
nice attempt at dodgeing the post - nice little “we’re so oppressed” bullshit too- we’re not talking about the other folks - we’re talking about the JW - and in that post - your bullshit about not setting dates.
Here’s an honest question for the Jehovah’s Witnesses here. Back in nursing school, I had a classmate that was a Jehovah’s Witness, and I asked her what she would do if she had to administer blood. She dodged the question, I know that the sect teaches that its members can not give or receive blood, but how does that relate to other people? It it against the teachings for a Jehovah’s Witness to aid in a blood transfusion?
ETA:LavenderBlue, I think we would largely agree on a whole lot, I just like to caution atheists not to turn their lack of belief into a dogmatic system that excludes all others.
Blood transfusions are extremely rarely the ONLY option - bloodless surgery is far superior, and forces a level of care and attention by doctors that all but guarantee speedy recovery. If a blood transfusion is required to save a life, then that life is given up, because there’s lots of things that can’t be recovered from (getting your head cut off, being disemboweled, etc) and this is considered one of those things.
Some religions, sure. But calling Witnesses immoral is pretty ignorant
My post, which you are quoting, was not directly in response to yours (which I quoted). It was more about the attitude displayed in yours and in many others like it.
I’m rather confused about “we’re not talking about the other folks - we’re talking about the JW - and in that post - your bullshit about not setting dates.”
Except it’s clearly not one of those things, as blood transfusions have saved countless lives. It is, in fact, the method of recovery. That’s just wacko shit.
