Witness haters--are you happy now? :(

Based solely on your posts in this thread, I get the feeling that you’ve been writing without taking into consideration that people don’t already know what you’re thinking. Everyone is prone to do that to some extent when they get emotional or worked up about something, and some of us aren’t always good at writing out our unprocessed thoughts, which further contributes to the problem.

My recommendation: Before clicking submit, try rereading your post as if you were a stranger with no other insights into what you were thinking when you wrote it. Go ahead and go back to your OP and try it. The title of the thread, combined with your closing of “Satisfied?” comes off as distinctly accusatory and seems to presume that the reading audience generally supports the level of hate required to shoot at proselytizing JW’s!

A bit more care about how the tone of your message would be received would probably have prevented the backlash. You’ve been around long enough to know how the Pit works and how slim the margin of error can be. People will sometimes strain to interpret the OP in the most negative way possible - but in this case, you all but forced people to interpret it that way, and you still don’t seem to realize that it was your own wording and your continued lack of timely clarification to your intended meaning that led to it.

(Shit, now I get the feeling that I’m not being very clear, but I’m tired and going on very little sleep, so I’m not going to take my own advice.)

SUBMIT. Going to bed now… :o

Sorry your snarky post prompted snarky responses.

Really. It comes down to this.

If your OP had been something like, “Fuck the fucking fucker who shot at these Witnesses. They were already leaving! I know a lot of you hate them, but seriously I can’t imagine any of you actually want them dead. Am I right?”

You would have elicited very different responses.

When someone feels like the perpetual victim (like the OP) it becomes hard to comprehend that your actions can upset other people.

“What? What’d I do?”

Witnesses are treated harshly because they fail to identify with their marks. The OP demonstrates the complete inability to relate to others outside his group; he only sees non-Witnesses as wrong or misguided and appears to enjoy fulfilling his persecution complex a little too much. OP, no one should be shot at, not even for trespassing unless they feel their lives are in danger. An awful lot of us liberal minded folks find guns to be unnecessary hazards, but you don’t care about that, do you, because liberal minded folks might just be gay or gay friendly and that’s abhorrent to you. An awful lot of anti-gun folks are the type to fall under the heading of LBGT or volunteer at organizations interested in seeking equality. An awful lot of peace loving folks would never think of pushing their spiritual beliefs or lack thereof on anyone unbidden. An awful love of voting, pro gun-control types participate in political functions on many levels, and some serve to protect the freedoms of you and your kind. So you see? We can’t win this one, because you like too much the position you are holding, that of terminally under-appreciated persecuted minority.

Any Witness or Mormon knocking at our doors unbidden is the equivalent to any other pushy salesmen who presumes to tell us we’re doing it wrong. “Look, your yard looks terrible, you ought to be doing this our way” “Your house is a wreck, you can’t be happy and satisfied while living like oblivious slobs, let me show you what you are doing wrong” “Listen, we are convinced we are right and that you are doomed unless you behave exactly as we do.”

Religious pedlars tell each other they are providing a service, but it’s a service that comes at the cost of our privacy and our peace and quiet, and besides the annoyance, the cost of what you are selling is exorbitant else we would all be on board. We don’t want to carve ourselves off from the world; this is a wondrous place of beauty and love. We don’t want to isolate ourselves or shame our family members for believing differently. We don’t want to allow minors to suffer and perish; we want to take advantage of modern medicine. We don’t want to spend our Saturdays annoying people. We want to continue to text our friends and lovers, we want to continue enjoying oral sex, we want to occasionally masturbate and watch television and movies without the looming, invasive, disapproving oversight of judgmental elders. We occasionally want to sleep in on Sunday, or spend a Wednesday night with our families. We want to enjoy the beauty and variety of this incredible Earth, and we want to enjoy small pleasures that cause others no harm. We don’t join you because we don’t want a small group of sanctimonious old men to direct our every action and control our every thought and shame us for deviating from a rigid, unforgiving routine. We want to embrace our brothers and sisters, including those brothers who love brothers and sisters who love sisters. We want to continue to attempt to improve the political environment and living conditions for our fellow man, and for some of us that means voting, running for office, or even joining the military. We feel we are doing good work by participating in the community at large rather than operating inside a shrinking pool of insular people.

Your Satan-ruled World is a dismal, ugly place fraught with forbidden music, forbidden art, forbidden acts of love. Your World is fraught with imaginary dangers and temptations that cause no mortal harm, and many of those imagined dangers and temptations serve to bond us to our fellow humans. Your world is risky when people die for foolish reasons and denial of simple cures. Your world is exacting and rigid and missteps are punished more harshly than any Worldy prison. We don’t want any part of the metaphysical prison you inhabit. I should say “I”. I don’t want any part of your ugly, hate-filled, paranoid, small world.

Had to read most of thread to see if this had been said.

I always say this is what I say. I never have though. I have never had one come to my door. Guess they’re not so interested in saving me.

I have met them in the wild though and they’ve never tried to preach to me. They just ask me to read their magazine which I do. I’ll read anything really.

I’m supposed to hate them because a long time before I was born a branch of the family I don’t know had a woman who was JW who to let her child die by refusing a transfusion but I don’t. I think it’s sad. If I’m asked to die to follow a century old rule then I figure I’ve backed the wrong deity.

Glad to know I’ll have about a thousand years not to become a JW though. That’s a pretty good run I’d say.

Practice, preach, yadda.

I didnt read the whole thread but heres why I hate JWs.

We have a JW church a few blocks away. So they start coming by to convert us. The main one is a very nice old lady about 80 years old. She comes by with another younger person who is a helper.

Anyway she starts coming by once a month or so. Im an atheist and my wife is Catholic. My wife is very nice. She will not tell them to beat it. I tell her to just be rude to them and theyll get the hint. But my wife is too nice to do it. Eventually, she was hiding from the woman when she came by because otherwise it was 2 hours wasted listening to her bullshit.

So eventually I step in and very nicely tell them that we arent really interested in being converted. This shouldve been enough.

But she comes back on her regular schedule. Again my wife is in the house hiding from her. An ex JW that we know tells us that you have to be very insistent that they dont come back. So again I step in and VERY sternly tell them that we arent interested and to not come back.

And this works for about 6 months but then she comes again. I am very pissed about this. I did everything I was supposed to do. I politely asked them to leave at first. That shouldve been enough. Then I sternly ask them to leave, which definitely was enough. And finally I have to result to yelling at an 80 year old woman to “get the fuck off my porch.”

Never in a million years would I think that Id have to yell “get the fuck off my porch” to an 80 year woman but there you go. The JWs managed to make it happen.

There are better ways to treat the JWs , One just needs to ask them to prove their Bible was not written by humans, or who created the place for God to be. Or just make the sign of the cross over them.

If it’s repeatedly the same JW (or LDS Missionary, for that matter), can’t you just get a restraining order? Or file trespassing charges? I guess you’d have to file charges first, huh?

I’m picturing holding up both index fingers in the shape of a cross and crying, “Back! Back, I say!”

They can call me anything they want.

They’re freaks.

Attempting to “convert” someone is assaulting them in the most fundamental way possible. JW’s deserved every bit of the abuse they get. Killing them is still a bit extreme, but they bring it on themselves by continually attacking others.

For the polite version, read CLee’s excellent post above.

You may consider CLee’s post polite; well, you’re entitled to your own opinion.
To Monavis: The situation you bring up sounds abnormal; where I live, visits to a disinterested householder may not recur for a year or more.
“Attacking”, Silenus? Ask Tomndebb about the footnote at the end of Matthew in the Confraternity translation; as I read it, it said that Jesus wanted the apostles to “Conquer the world and make all men his disciples.” That seems to be what Constantine tried to do a few centuries later (“In Hoc Signo Vinces”), but the footnote interpretation squarely contradicts the plain text at Matthew 10:14 where Jesus frankly said he knew there were people who wouldn’t accept them. I found that out myself. [Shrug] :o
The Witnesses have an authorization, sanctioned by the First Amendment to the Constitution and originating in Scripture–specifically Matthew 28:19, Acts 1:8, 20:20, 2 Timothy 3:16, 17. Note also Acts 5:38, 39 for a very cogent point!

I did make the sign of the Cross over some one time and they almost fell off my porch getting away!

I live in a rural Area, They do come to my house, but I just ask them to prove their Bible was written by God and not humans, or who created the place for God to be

They just leave. They have no answers. They do have their right to their beliefs, but since they can’t prove anything there is no reason to say anything…

I’d Love to understand the concept behind “sanctioned by the first amendment” - because, well - it isn’t.

You’re actions may be ‘protected’ by the first amendment (meaning that G’vt generally can’t make rules against your specific practices) but that is not the same as “sanctioned” - in fact, if it were sanctioned, that would be a violation of the first amendment.

dougie - you’re not helping your case here. all the scriptures in the world my be your justification, but as has been shown your interpretation is not the only interpretation, nor is it neccisarily the correct one.

Little more polite than you, because I didn’t disturb your family or knock on your door in order to disapprove of your behavior.

How would you receive a Muslim who came to your door singing the praises of Sharia? Would you be moved to encourage your wife to dress in Hijab or burka? Would you grow a beard? Would you consider stoning a daughter who you suspect of having congress outside of wedlock? It’s the same God, after all, but with a longer history and far more subscribers. Would you welcome an evangelical Muslim into your home to sell your family, including young and impressionable and old and lonely family members, his brand of religious practice?

Your practice takes all the joy out of the (presumably) God created world and introduces a crippling paranoia and shame. Leave us to appreciate our planet, our minds, and our bodies, thanks.

How quickly we forget that a dildo can be a weapon as well!

And also talks kids out of medical treatment, you miserable fucking assholes. JW’s are crazy and stupid.
