Woman buys sun, plans to charge tax on sunlight

Link.

So is this a Spain-only thing? What about EU law? Shouldn’t the UN get involved? What about the Americans, Russians, and Chinese? Is the International Space Station doomed to pay a toll for the rest of its days? And what about all those solar-pwered houses?

She can claim all she wants, but nothing’s going to come of it.

What she’s doing inside Spain is between her and the Spanish government. However, outside Spain, no court or government is going to recognise that Spain has any jurisdiction over the Sun, so a claim made under Spanish law would be treated as a nullity.

AFAIK this sort of thing has been going on - in the US too - for decades, mostly with people “selling” plots on planets though, and this is the first instance I know of that involves taxing sunlight. Good idea. Not a hope in hell that this is going to make her money. Not least because you can’t tax people if you’re not a government, and that even if she did legally own the sun, she probably can’t demand payment for unrequested services. If this stands, I’m going to sue her next time I get a sun burn.

If she goes there and plants a flag on the surface, in person, I for one will be prepared to recognise her claim.

…cause she’s the TAXMAN, yeah…

She’s obviously not very bright.

Since the beginning of time, man has yearned to destroy the sun. I’ve done the next best thing.

Just wait for all the class action suits for skin cancer…

So Ms Duran is admitting ownership of an unregulated fusion reactor in full meltdown mode? One for which she presumedly has made no plans to install control regulators or any other safety features on? I think her legal liability is looking pretty bad.

Does this mean that I can sue her to get the damn thing turned off when I’m trying to sleep in the summer? It puts out like 10 klx.

I am shocked to see the total disregard for the law evinced in this thread. I hope she starts filing suits all over the place. It’s not like she’s in it for the money. From the article in the OP:

If she ends world hunger with this, it will make it all worthwhile.

Sure she is. She’s going to go at night!

Even better if she bought it on a Sunday.

raises hand
I hereby claim all the space between earth and the sun…and I’m not letting those solar rays pass through my territory without a cut of the action.

sings
Here comes the sun, Doo doo doo do
here comes the sun,
and I say it’s all right (guitar, drums)

I’m trying to buy the atmosphere but it’s up in the air right now.

Dammit, I was going to say that!

That is probably the single-most repeated Simpsons line in my family.

See, that was the flaw with Mr. Burns’s plan. He just didn’t see the advantages of taxing the citizenry of Springfield. No, he had to try and block the sun instead.

This sort of thing burns me up.
