While in-between orders, the woman stopped to help a shooting victim, pressing a pillow to the wound to slow the bleeding, and trying to keep him concious until help could arrive. When the police asked her to fill out a statement, she had to call her job to tell them that someone would need to fill in for her until she could return. When she did get back to the resturant, she found that she had no longer had job.
I just hope that if the supervisor is ever in need of help that people don’t say, “Sorry, dude. I’m on the clock!”
Oh, I have a feeling that karma (and/or REALLY bad PR) are going to bite that supervisor in the ass. And that the woman who was fired is going to get a bunch of job offers.
If there’s any justice in this world, that is. :dubious:
Gee, I’m betting business at Franks has slowed considerably at the news. I’d boycott until Boyd is out and Marcella McAulay is brought back, with a raise.
Here’s a follow-up article. Basically, people are calling up the pizza joint to tell the bosses they’re assholes, and the driver has been offered a job at Domino’s.
Would you care for some cheese with that whine, Sally? Gimme a break! Anyone who would work for those people, knowing the situation, deserves whatever happens. We’re not talking about glamorous, highly paid career positions with unlimited potential, here. It’s a crappy job in a pizza parlor. Walk away!
Ironicly, the manager was shot a few days ago in an unrelated hold-up. Apparently he died because his workers were to afraid of getting fired to call 911 or apply first aid.
Cripes. I’ve never been to Selkirk, but you can be sure that I won’t stop at that pizza place until it puts up a ‘new management’ sign… and lives up to it. And the asshole is delivering pizza him/her self. On a bicycle. In the rain.
A guy showed up at 11:00 AM for his job that started at 8:00AM. He had his arm in a sling and a neck brace and told his boss that on his way to work he tripped on a torn carpet and fell down a flight of stairs.
Even if there were ongoing problems with this waitress, the owners didn’t do themselves any favors by spouting off the quote in the OP. One of the owners, Boyd, was the one who decided to be a smart-ass with the “we don’t pay them to be EMTs” comment. Surely he had to realize how horrible that made the company sound.
It does indeed sound like they’re simply doing damage control now. IMO, the best thing they could have done is apologize profusely for their dumb-ass comments, hire her back, and THEN fire her when she refuses to wear her apron.
Poyson, I don’t see a link to your story…at any point, have the owners actually come out and said that an employee stopping to aid a gunshot victim is normally considered an acceptable act, as opposed to a firing offense? Because it sounds like they’re just being defensive, without altering their original comments at all.
showdow4md, welcome to the Straight Dope. I’m simply curious what motivates you to find a thread that is 10 years old, register for the dope, and resurrect it with your first post. And the first post seems to be the same Jason Boyd. Who incidentally sounds like a total a**hole.
