When I read this story the first time I thought the exact same thing. She had time for cocktails before slicing her belly open but not picking up the phone?

Maybe she needed the child to assist her somehow. After the baby was out and safe, then she sent the child for the local nurse?

I thought the Antartica woman was airlifted out in a daring rescue. Unless that is another female scientist down there.

She discovered the lump in her breast in June. In July, she did her own biopsy, transmitted images of the samples to a pathologist, and then administered her own chemotherapy until it was possible to get out of the station in October, when the emergency evacuation was done. I found a fairly detailed article about the technical aspects of the whole event.
