Maybe she needed the child to assist her somehow. After the baby was out and safe, then she sent the child for the local nurse?

She discovered the lump in her breast in June. In July, she did her own biopsy, transmitted images of the samples to a pathologist, and then administered her own chemotherapy until it was possible to get out of the station in October, when the emergency evacuation was done.
