People acclimatise themsleves to it.
Err … what? You can go swimming in the winter if you make a hole in the ice, it’s not going to kill you. In fact it’s going to make you feel really alive instead.
Members of the Polar Bear club have taken ice cold swims for decades with no ill effects.
Is Russia just the cold version of Florida now?
You don’t even have to do that. Probably better if you do, but all the people I know who have taken a jump in a frozen or near-frozen lake (including myself) just went in and did it with no previous prep. The way it felt like to me is that kind of took my breath away, and it felt like all my muscles just get really tightened up, but I’m not aware of it killing you unless you have some sort of pre-existing condition. People do this for charity every year where I’m at, and many of them are completely not experienced.
She needs to find better friends.
Well, I thought going from the warmth of clothing to total immersion in freezing water causes cardiac arrest. I read in a survival guide that such sudden immersion can kill.
Haven’t done it though.
I’m sure lots of things can cause cardiac arrest even if they aren’t common. Lots of people jump into cold water on a regular basis and I’ve never heard of one dying from it.
Two points:
- It is possible the woman in the original video knew the pond was frozen, but thought the ice was thin enough that she would break through.
B. Here is a old story about jumping into water through ice (a good story, even though it is not true):

It can, in the same way that me jumping out & yelling, “BOO!” can. If you have a weakened cardiac system that shock, might cause an incident.
I have seen thousands go into the ocean over the past two decades that I’ve done it; never once saw anyone die.
I’ve dumped from a kayak into icy water. It takes your breath away for an instant, then it’s not all that bad. Getting out of the water sucks, especially if you have to get back in your boat and continue on your journey.
But - blondes! Amirite?! Har har!

Your thread could have easily been started without the sexist, dumb blonde nonsense. Not sure why you thought it necessary to go there, but in the future avoid this.
I like her, she’s tough, that looked painful and she walked it off!
I’m appalled that people still haven’t learned to turn their phone SIDEWAYS when taking a video!
People take that too far, though. I was once using my phone in portrait mode to record a dog playing fetch up and down a long straight hallway when a bystander smirked that I was too unsophisticated to turn the phone to landscape mode.
Never mind that landscape would only have recorded a lot of featureless white wall on both sides and less length of hall with frolicking dog.
In regards to this, while I try to shoot horizontal as much as possible coming from a traditional photo and video background, I think there is a good argument to be made that much media is being shared on mobile devices that are most commonly and comfortably held vertically, so perhaps traditional standards should not be applied to the newest technologies. So I’ve gone soft, nay, accepted that not all videos must be horizontal anymore.
Noted. No blonde jokes on the SDMB. There’s already several thousand good ones on Google.
The moron holding the camera was not too helpful.
The gauze is so that you do something that is vaguely medical that makes you think you are actually treating an injury even though you have no idea why you are doing it.

First, do not discuss moderation in thread. You’ve been here long enough to know that.
Second, if you can’t tell when it’s appropriate to lead off with a sexist joke and when it’s not, perhaps you need a break from starting threads.
