So where do I look to see what the sharp dressed man of today wears? I’m afraid my old crowd wore mostly shorts and Hawaiian shirts. I have tons of casual clothes, but I’m looking for more of what used to be called a “GQ” look. Somehow I suspect GQ is hopelessly outdated, but I’m so out of the male fashion scene that I have no clue. Ladies, where would you buy clothes for your man if you wanted him to be a sharp dressed man?
Why am I experiencing the almost (but not quite) irresistable urge to start making fowl jokes here? Or tossing in the odd canard?
Check out the What Not to Wear website. I don’t always agree with their choices for women but I think most of their male make-overs look pretty good. There’s information and helpful types with the profiles of each makeover.
I am perfectly serious when I say this, you might want to catch up on the first season of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” They have really good tips, and don’t sell a particular manner of dressing, just good taste.
My pal phatlewt buys his sharp-dressin’ clothes at Express Men (but 90% of the time on sale, because they’re priced a little high), occasionally at the Gap and Old Navy, and every now and then at Target. Please note, while it is rarely possible to emerge from Express Men looking anything but sharp, this is very, very possible at Old Navy and Target. Shop with caution.
I can’t vouch for it but girl-shopping magazine “Lucky” has a boy-shopping magazine sidekick called “Cargo.” It might be worth a look.
daffyduck, check out Banana Republic, too. JCrew’s hit or miss. Many of their items are quite preppy; if you’re willing to wade through embroidered chinos and seersucker pants, you should be able to find a few nice pieces. Kenneth Cole has really nice items; you can rarely go wrong with him.
Once you get a feel for what to wear from the more ‘outfitty’ stores, you can then pick up individual pieces (something from Lacoste, something from Armani Exchange, something from Ralph Lauren) and pair them together with confidence.
Actually, GQ(that’s Gentleman’s Quarterly not General Questions) is a great source for what’s current in men’s styles.
And online check Bluefly.com or YOOX.com for good sources of great men’s clothes.
