What I am interested in knowing is how do you mount the horse using a side saddle. With regular saddles, you stick your foot in the stirrup and throw your leg over the horse. With the side saddle it appears that you would have to put your foot in the stirrup, turn so that you are more or less facing away from the horse and put your butt on the saddle and move your right leg over the horn. While I can see why throwing your leg over the horse in a long skirt could be awkward, it would seem mounting the side saddle would be just as awkward with having to arrange your skirt. I have seen pictures of Queen Elizabeth riding side saddle and her skirt seem to be long but not very full.
COWBOY

O cowboy so lean, O cowboy so tall,
You sit there straight as an arrow.
But side-saddle you ride, instead of astride.
Are you perhaps a gay ranchero?
“Now, that’s dirty.”
A couple years ago, Schneider Saddlery had a couple of lovely Western sidesaddles for sale that I just drooled over. I think sidesaddle riding is a lost art and I’m glad to see people keeping it alive! I could never do it, I’m too ingraned with riding astride.
I thought this thread seemed familiar! Well, not all zombies are hostile.
Here are some Mexican ladies riding sidesaddlein Guadalajara. They areescaramuzas charras. (Warning: Music may play!)
