Women wearing a slouch hat etiquitte

When men wear a slouch hat with one side up, it is the left side. If a woman were to wear a slouch hat with the brim up, would it be the reverse (like buttons) and have the right side up?

Say what now?

Welp, I found this with the right side up.

And this from the Civil War

And this, which suggests that women can also wear it left-side up.

Maybe in the US right side and Aussies left side because they’re upside down. Like the way the toilet drains.

Nah, it wouldn’t.

Never heard of a brimmed hat called a slouch hat. That makes me think of a knitted beanie that slouches one way or another.

In those pics I see something like a Stetsons, fedoras or sombrero

I am not a milliner or a hatter

When I hear “slouch hat” I think of boonie hats.

Those apparently are also called slouch hats.

Me neither! I think of a slouch hat as one of those hats that newsboys used to wear or old guys driving around in a convertible.

IIRC, The Shadow who knows what evil lurks is routinely described as wearing one.

In order: a newsboy cap and a flat cap.
(Though both caps go by many other names too.)

I also did not know it was called a slouch hat, but I’m familiar with the general style of hat. I used to have one I’d sometimes wear when camping, probably still have it somewhere.

If I recall correctly, the sides of the brim can be buttoned up on both sides. I took it as a functional thing. Having a walkabout on a sunny day where you are often changing direction? Have both sides down. Canoeing down a river, where the sun is on your right shoulder? Keep only right side down. Cloudy, or later in the day? Button both sides up.

In the US armed forces, only one community gets to wear a slouch hat as part of their working uniform: female drill instructors.

In this case, they wear the left brim snapped up.
