Women's world cup 2019

89th, 90th minute is gray area. All I know from watching soccer my whole life it is a common practice to not try and score in stoppage when you are up by 3, let alone 12. And celebrating the 13th goal like its a cup winner is shameful.

It seems kind of bush league to run the score up like that. Sure, goal differential comes into it but how likely is it that the US would have to rely on differential to advance? I hope the US loses now.

Agree it would be more embarrassing to the Thai women if the US had played keepaway for the second half. I have zero problem after watching the game with the 12. The 13th, in stoppage time, where real teams routinely stop trying if up by 3, is my issue, that and the celebrations after the first five or so. And the Golden Boot is now going to be won by someone who scored 5 against inferior opposition.

The last two goals were scored by Morgan (#5 on the day) and Lloyd (number 100 or so?), not by first timers. Number 13, again, was in stoppage time, where most every team in the world quits trying to score if up by only 3. No one asked for free shots on goal. Yes FIFA partially to blame for allowing too many teams, the women’s cup should be 16 probably, to avoid this.

This is not two paid professional NFL teams on the same level. This is US-Angola in the 1992 Olympics. And the analogy to the 13th goal here would be if vs Angola, the US had the ball with twenty seconds to go, shot clock off, and instead of passing the clock out as normal, they dunked, and preened afterwards. Soccer is supposed to pride itself on respect and fairplay.

I pray England or France shit-stomps them.

This did not happen. Only 1 celebration out of 13 was at all ebullient.

Cite that teams, in knock out competitions where goal differential matters, stop trying to score?

Nobody gave Germany shit for beating Saudi Arabia 7-0 in 2002. I don’t even think anyone cared that Australia beat American Samoa 31-0.

Even at the high school level. In high school at one of our sectionals, our team defeated the opposing team 20-0, with one kid getting ten goals (only tying the Illinois record). I thought the whole thing was ridiculous, but, oddly, don’t remember much backlash.

Most (all?) sports have certain unwritten “rules” that apply in these sorts of situations. We all know, for example, that in baseball you’re not supposed to steal bases (among other things) if you’re leading big late in the game. In high school football, it seems like every season there’s a story or two about a league or school punishing a coach for running up the score. I understand that running up the score is viewed as inappropriate in many other sports (and perfectly appropriate in some). It seems like it’s a constant debate over whether or not running up the score (or, more generally, the proper behavior when you’re leading by a large margin) is “ethical” or “professional” in men’s sports.

I don’t know enough about soccer (much less international soccer) to know what the customs are, but it’s not like this isn’t a frequent discussion in men’s sports.

The fact FIFA would have Australia in a qualification group with Fiji, Tonga, and two Samoas was shameful. No one cared about it though, because no one outside of Australia knew about it- US- Thailand was on TV worldwide. Simple human respect. And say the US would have finished second in the group on goal differential without 13-0, you still would have progressed, but with dignity, which I would prefer myself.

The custom, in a group stage in a knock-out competition where goal differential is a tie breaker, is to run up the score as much as possible.

It’s not only about moving on, it’s also about seeding. Are you saying the U.S. should purposely put themselves at a disadvantage in later rounds just to be polite?

100% correct. But human decency should come into play in anything you do. Worst case scenario for the US if they won this game 5-0 would be second place to Sweden and still advance. Chile has as much chance of beating the US as Thailand did. So you come in second in the group and have to play a first place team in the next round instead of a second- is that so horrible for the big bad USA? Arent they going to destroy everybody anyway?

Huh? Who should they have put them in a group with? All teams in Oceania outside Australia (at the time) and New Zealand are just awful. There isn’t any conceivable group where Australia doesn’t crush every team they play.

Last WC Germany blew a team out 10-0 and only won the group because of it. Do they not have any dignity?

Yes, depending on how other groups go, the US could benefit and play a worse team in the next round based on this result, than if they had won 5-0. But I say win with class, lose with class.

YES that is a horrible result. You reduce your chances of winning the thing you’ve spent your entire life pursuing because some people on the internet are embarrassed on behalf of some people they never met? That’s insane.

Especially since, no, the US isn’t guaranteed to win the competition. You know they lost to Sweden in the first knock out round the last big tournament they were in, right?

a 3-0 scoreline in the 10-0 game would have won them the group. And they didn’t score in stoppage time.

I’m not sure you understand how sports competitions work at this level.

They didn’t know that 3-0 would have won’t the group at the time, it was the first game.

RolleyesNo, not in stoppage time, only in the 85th. Not for lack of trying though.

Yes, and they didn’t win the She Believes Cup they just hosted, due to two draws. Win the group, they play Spain or Germany, come in second, Canada or Netherlands, you could argue which one would actually be beneficial.

As I said no real problem with 12-0. Huge problem with the 13th in stoppage time.

Also, it is a given they will advance. Not knowing how the other groups will play out, it is VERY possible that the US will WANT to finish second to get an easier opponent, and will regret the 13-0. It is not uncommon in such tournaments for teams to want to finish second when they see their possible next round opponents. So you cannot unequivocally state today that the US will play an easier opponent in the next round if they win the group vs. coming in second.
