Recently, a buddy of mine lent me a series of art lectures on DVD: The Great Artists of the Italian Renaissance. There are three parts, with each part consisting of 2 DVDs.
Well they’re great. The lectures are done by a William Kloss, an independent art historian. As he talks he shows you the particular painting/sculpture/whatever at issue, and as you listen, you get to learn what makes this work so wonderful. If you are inclined along that path, you might find the lectures thrilling. (My wife certainly does - and dammit, so do I.) If you don’t, they offer an iron clad (they say) money back guarantee.
I liked the the Renaissance lectures so much that I ordered the History of European Art, which comes with the same narrator and from the same online vendor: The Teaching Company. If you choose to investigate, you’ll discover they present lectures on music appreciation , art, science, math, and so on.
The DVDs aren’t cheap. But, at one time or another they put every program on sale. For example the series I just bought is in 4 parts - 8 DVDs - which normally sells for $519.95, I bought on sale for $129.95 plus $20 for S&H.
If you’re interested go to:

At that URL you can check out the European Art course, and up above you can click on Home, On Sale, etc., to get more info.
I HAVE NO RELATIONSHIP OF ANY KIND WITH THE TEACHING COMPANY OR ANY ONE ASSOCIATED WITH IT. JUST PASSING ALONG SOME GOOD STUFF. PLEASE DON’T EVEN THINK I HAVE AN ULTERIOR MOTIVE OF ANY KIND.
