WOO-HOO--Bernie Madoff's prom night is TONIGHT

Cry me a river. If Madoff doesn’t like what happens to him in jail, he shouldn’t have done things that earn a jail sentence, should he? Everyone in prison is in effect a volunteer. Madoff’s victims did not volunteer to see their life’s savings and investments reduced to zero.

From what I hear, Madoff will go to some Club Fed type of minimum security prison with other white collar criminals. Rapes are almost unheard of in that setting.

I was going to ask about that. I figured that was where he’d wind up.

What he said.

I looked into the WTC numbers and they are fuzzy as well. The highest estimate is 105B, that one includes economic impact, lost business, etc. The cost of clean-up and rebuild was estimated at 33B-36B ( that is based on rebuilding the same building, the actual will be higher of course.) Thea actuarial value of the lives lost came in at 15B or so, which is how I came up with 50B.

So, the WTC numbers are higher than the 'real" Madoff numbers.

I like the way you think.

I would share your outrage if there were any to be shared. But has anyone really been expressing that in this thread, especially before you posted this? A couple of people made jokes (me included), but they were not direct wishes for rape. Your outrage, I believe, is misguided.

Maybe I’m way off here, but sometimes I wonder if some of these guys really understand what it’s like to work for a living and occasionally wonder how they’ll make next month’s rent. I think that some of them are so far removed from that reality that being thrust into it would be a hell worse than any prison.

But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe they were once poor, and dug their way out through semi-honest means. Maybe they’d fare just fine.

You read where the OP called it “prom night” and said "Oh, God I hope it hurts !!!, right?

Good ol’ Bernie is going to pull a Kenneth Lay on us, and croak before Bubba in prison gets his slow dance. His family will live handsomely off their grifts.

Madoff - best villan name / fraud combination ever; “made off” as in “with the money”…

I will come right out and say I have a direct wish for rape in this case. I think this guy needs a hard lesson in what it’s like to be powerless.

I’ve been thinking about that all week. Somebody more familiar than myself with Prohibition-era writing might say his name is Runyonesque.

I think that settles it, tdn. I do think that’s disgusting, accidentalyuppie. Not Bernie Madoff-level disgusting, but still on the charts.

If you want a prisoner to be raped, that means you either want another prisoner to be able to rape while in prison (wow, great prison system there) or you want a guard to be a rapist (wow, great prison system there).

Either way, you’re justifying rape, and it’s not a bit disgusting–it’s fully-fledged in repulsiveness.

Regardless of where he eventually lives out the rest of his life, if I were a betting type of gal (which I’m not), I’d bet he doesn’t live it very long. He scammed way too much money for anyone to be satisfied with, “Gee, he’s in jail, so I feel completely at ease with his punishment.” Someone is going to want repayment in blood would be my guess.

I say six months tops.

I lack expertise on the state of the conditions at correctional facilities, but… I don’t think people get shived in white collar prisons.

I think this is pretty rare as well. However, the characterization of the federal variety of minimum security prisons as “white collar” seems misleading, as does the assumption that no sexual abuse happens in those places.

I really have no idea what it’s like and maybe that was the wrong term for me to use. But I’m thinking Madoff would be much more likely to get murdered in jail if he was in Angola instead of wherever he’s going to end up. I know he’s not going to Florence, but it would be sort of appropriate.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding of federal minimum security consisted of:

  1. No bars. Small rooms, two to a room. Door is locked, but on the inside, could seem like a small studio apartment.

  2. No fences; big outdoor yard that might look like a high school recreation area.

  3. Libraries, visitation, commissaries, computers, etc.

  4. No “Bubba the Rapist” next door. You have “Joe the Tax Cheat”.

Now, maybe I’ve read too many books, and I’m sure that being incarcerated kind of sucks, but it can’t be like the total hell that this thread makes it seem.

I hope his sentence includes some work release. There are a variety of jobs I’d like to see him do. Picking up litter at the side of the road wearing one of those orange jumpsuits would be perfect.
