Woodlawn Boneyard Tour: Sunday, Aug. 10

OK, it is going to storm all week, off and on . . . Maybe it’ll be all rained out by Sunday?

Who’s still in? Remember, Sunday the 10th, under the big clock/information desk in the main room of Grand Central Terminal, at Park & 42nd, no later than 10:30. Hope they’re not doing subway repairs again next weekend!

10:30 will be more than enough time. And to make it even easier, there’s only one stairway down at this time due to reconstruction of the one on the Van Cortlandt Park side.

I have to drop somebody off for an 11:15 Mass in Westchester but should be able to make it back in time.

Dad has to send his regrets–he’ll be in Colorado on a railfan trip; but I’ll see if I can borrow his little Woodlawn history book from the 80’s.

I’ve met Eve before, so look for me around the turnstiles! If I don’t make it in time, I’ll see you at the cemetery gate. BTW, there’s bathrooms right inside the gate you can use before the tour if you need to.

Wear comfy shoes and see you soon! I’m still mad at Rory D. for building such a big restaurant in the middle of a residential neighborhood, but I’ll try Rambling House if everybody else wants to.

the 20% maybe looming e’er closer. winken the wonderful’s kidney is acting up and she has lost over a pound in weight. i have a consult with the vet. i’ll know better on thurs. i’m rather hopeful.

count me in.

Channel 7 says it should be nice and sunny out on Sunday. Channel 4 says thunderstorms.

Channel 4 can bite me.

Baby bro and history-loving girlfriend might come!

If the weather patterns hold, the middle of the day should be OK, sandwiched between rainstorms. But I’d bring a water bottle and clothes you don’t mind getting wet.

There’s a little mostly-Irish enclave of a neighborhood next to the cemetery which is where I live. The cemetery is far more exciting. Those of you going to Rambling House (or Colleen’s, or whatever) will get to see it in all its outer-borough splendor.

Oh yeah, the latest celeb inhabitant is La Reina herself, Celia Cruz! Azucar! However, I believe her mausoleum is still being built and she is in the receiving tomb. Hundreds of people followed the coffin up to the Bronx from the funeral home on the East Side, just like the old days.

Oooh, ya think they’ll crack the door and let us get a snapshot?

I’ll call ahead and make sure the tour is still on, what with the constant, soul-destroying, head-pounding rain.

. . . Just talked to Susan at Woodlawn, and she said in very definite tones, “It will. Not. Rain. On Sunday.”

So I’ll see most of you at Grand Central at 10:30, and the rest of you at the Woodlawn subway entrance this Sunday!

Well, hell. I’m going to try to make it yet, but right now it looks as though I won’t be able to come on Sunday (work-related). :frowning: If I don’t see you folks, I hope everyone has a great rain-free time…

It looks like it’s going to (surprise!) rain, so bring your Edward Gorey rainy-graveyard gear.

And, they are doing subway work again this weekend, so I’ll call and let them know we might be late.

Oh, and click here to see some of the famous dead folks we’ll be meeting! I’m all het-up about Marilyn Miller, Nora Bayes, Geo. M. Cohan, the Castles, Lotta Crabtree and Olive Thomas!

But then, I’m kinda nutz . . .

Two (slightly-better-news) points:

  1. This schedule shows minimal repair work on the 4 this weekend - and none of it affects where we’re going.

  2. The 4 run is supposed to run express in Manhattan during the hours we’ll be taking it. Even on weekends, it only runs local in the late-night-wee-hour period. If you’re really interested, you may check the schedule, which is in pdf format here.

Argh. I hate coding. here.

winken the wonderful is back home with 2 meds to take. it looks like i’m gonna have to pass on this one.

Turns out I’m gonna be out of town, so I’ll have to pass, too.

Well, sorry to miss you guys who can’t make it–I’ll see the rest of you tomorrow! They’re saying it probably won’t rain till later in the afternoon, and the tour’s from 12:00 to 2:00, so maybe we’ll squeak through.
