Word puzzle

Word puzzle from last weeks NYT.

In the following puzzles, I have removed two letters that appear 3 times each in a familiar name, place or phrase. So, for instance, if the clue was

UNFLOWRD (9, 5)

The answer is

SUNFLOWER SEEDS

The 9 and 5 reflect the length of the words in the correct answer. The 3 S’s and 3 E’s were removed.

Here’s some that I got. I actually got about 22 out of 30 but I’m doing this from recall. I could post more tomorrow if anyone thought they were fun.

TAPCOD (4, 8)
CYSITR (5, 7)
OCMNTRAL (2, 3, 4, 5)
OEUSX (4,4,3)
FABR (7, 3)
MALDCOR (5, 8)
STLAWNCIV (2, 8, 5)

(mods: if this is copyrighted stuff, just delete it)

Got STLAWNCIV and OCMNTRAL
STLAWNCIV is St. Lawrence River.

OCMNTRAL is Ho Chi Minh Trail
'Sall I got for now…

That’s what I got. That’s all I can say in the way of verification.

I thought STL… was the easiest on they put in there.

. . .but the other one you got killed me.

 1. Tape Recorder
 2. Metal Detector
 3. St. Lawrence River

Daddgummit, I’m sure 2 and 3 are real easy.

Another few I remembered

RNCEHL (6, 6)
CNDGS (6,5) (I didn’t really like this one)
PLIDFCY (5,3,5) (This one, I’m only like 40% sure it’s right. It works, but it’s not very familiar to me).

I just googled my answer for PLIDFCY. I’m sure I’m right, now. (sorry about all the multiple replies.)

That one is unfamiliar to me too, but seemed by far the easiest of all of them - I got it in a matter of a few seconds. (I googled it as well to check that it was correct).

CYSITR:nanCY SInaTRa

That’s why I got, Tevildo.

I think this one is kind of easy.

FZBUN (7,4)

RNCEHL is Prince Phillip

Freezer Burn

That’s what I got.

One ‘l’ is correct, though.

I should add (if anyone didn’t notice), that if a letter appears in the clue, that letter will not be one of the answer letters. I.e., that letter won’t appear 4 times, but they only removed 3 of them.

OEUSX (4,4,3)
This one isn’t fair.

Pope Pius XII

That was the best one.

You might be right, but really you just want to be challenged with a word puzzle, right? If you came up with, it’s close to the rules. Anyway. . .right from the paper. I put a * next to the ones I couldn’t get.

Every answer here is a familiar phrase, name or title in which two letters of the alphabet appear exactly three times each. These letters have been removed, and the remaining letters (all different) run together. For example, if the answer were SUNFLOWER SEEDS, the three S’s and three E’s would have been removed, leaving UNFLOWRD. The numbers of letters in the answers are provided in parentheses. A score of 10 answers is good; 15 is excellent; 20 is superb; 25 is brilliant; only geniuses will get all 30. *
