"Wordle," a strangely compelling word game (Part 1)

ORATE
PASTE
SAUTE

Easy one today with my starting word.

RIOTS
PEACH
WASTE
SAUTE

Glad I didn’t get stuck in some WASTE/BASTE/TASTE guessing game at the end there. At least I would have already eliminated PASTE and HASTE with my second guess. But it was SAUTE, so par.

nm - didn’t read properly

How do you all post the graphics?
Anyway, got this one in 4

RATIO
TAMED
WASTE
SAUTE

That is my standard go to first word.
For the higher level puzzles (quordle. octordle etc) I use two starter words, either
RATIO
DUNES (or NUDES)
or
RADIO
TUNES
I like to know what vowels I am working with. Especially when no vowels come up at all (I’ve see SHYLY and MYRRH).

And yes, I did try duotrigordle. Got them all in 35 guesses. Only letters I didn’t use were Q and J. It’s a little easier because the letters gray out if there are no more left in the puzzle so you can eliminate those as double letters.

There is a button after you complete which says “share” which will copy the results into your clipboard, (at least on my PC using Chrome but probably works elsewhere as well). Then when you reply to the thread, simply press control-v to paste the contents of your clipboard. The text looks like it is graphics but is actually color-formatted text, and so can be pasted into a reply.

I am playing on my iphone so I can’t do it that way.

Except that it’s not a word. Missing an accent acute, isn’t it?

I have failed to get it twice over the past two months. Mostly I get 3 or 4

Once was a similar problem to what you avoided, when I had ATCH in two guesses but there are many consonant options that would work and I ran out of guesses before I got to WATCH.

Which was sort of funny as I first expected that to be an instruction to me, followed by the game revealing how I should have approached the guesses (ie, “you should have done this”) but it was just the answer.

There’s an interesting discussion on diacritics (accents) here.

My takeaway is that we use diacritics inconsistently in English and that a word missing an accent is still a word.

Yes, I overstated. It’s still a word but it’s a bit of a cheat. If I were copyediting a book and saw the word “saute” I would have the accent inserted.

How would you edit résumé?

Well, all I would do to your question, as written, is put quotation marks before and after your final word.

On the phone, select Share, it’ll pop up share options, one option is copy. Then come over here and paste it by reply to thread and resting your finger on the page and letting the paste option appear.

Oh, in a pedant’s perfect world (mine), there would be an option to insert such a critter. But once I knew the placement of the ‘S’ in the word, it could only be SAUTE – and I wasn’t going to quibble with Wordle over that!

Roger that. So you would correct “resumé” to “résumé”?

And pulykamell, thanks for the additional reply (and information).

Got it done late today, but got it done.

Yet again, I was sure I had it with my penultimate word.

I use ASIDE - an anagram of IDEAS. A Wordle S seems to be rarely at the end of a word.

I don’t know why my mind goes to the rarer word rather than the more common one.
