UPSET → Not the letter I would have expected to match…
ROUGH → At least a lot of letters are gone… FLUNK → ?LUF? or ?LU?F… maybe they’re ?LUFF, in which case… BLUFF
I think you could make a story out of my guesses in reverse.
If a letter isn’t placed, it’s not required to be in the guess.
Only letters whose position is known have to be kept in subsequent guesses on hard mode.
I’m not sure why Wordle works this way, and I play hard mode like letters guessed but not positioned correctly still have to be part of all subsequent guesses I make. Just a condition I try to impose upon myself (though sometimes I forget or slip my fingers, and either don’t play such a letter or I play it again in the same place I knew where it was not).
I just experimented with today’s Wordle using Hard Mode in a different browser. I began with ABUSE which had only one letter, the letter A, from the solution and that in the wrong position. I then tried PYLON and Wordle complained and said “Guess must contain A”
CRANE - three greens but still a lot of options
SHAKY - looking for words like CRASH, CRASS, CRAZY, CRACK, etc. Nothing
CRAMP - and there was still CRAFT and CRAWL - that I can see
I found four possible CRA__ words: CRAWL, CRAFT, CRAZY, and CRAMP, and I think that’s all.
I could have stayed in self-imposed hard mode and landed anywhere from 3 to 6, or WALTZ my way to a guaranteed 4.
Glad I made the choice I did, since CRAMP was last on my list.
