I started with the same first word as you but it took me three. My second word was VAPID
I try to exhaust common letters first.
I reached the correct word by trying to figure out where N would fit and then built around that. And admittedly got lucky. 
I was also trying to fit in S and luckily abandoned that.
Briefly popular as an insult around my college years.

I thought the color block patterns posted by @GuanoLad and @Richard_Pearse looked very interesting, and I was right. When midnight rolled around for me, I picked my most common starting word. After that I was able to add their color block info as a kind of spoiler to narrow things down to the right answer on my second guess.
Are my own color blocks too much of a spoiler since everybody here knows my most usual starting word?

Fortunately I’m still at 100%, and 24 of 24 ever since starting back on 2021-12-24. I’ve learned to stay away from this thread late in my Pacific time zone day, especially with the WORDLE on 12/27 FERRY (spoiler not needed).
This thread spoilered me once, back on 2021-12-27 and the word was FERRY. I have learned to stay away until I play for the day. I chose not to count it against my stats, but I don’t hide that fact either. I’m honest with myself about it — see my previous post.
So if it were me and that was the only time I saw the answer, I wouldn’t miss a day on purpose.
