I had a list of 10 words it could be after my 2nd word. Yikes. Had to go with a sleuth word to check letters, which wouldn’t cover all of them, but enough to help narrow things down. The word I chose paid off…could only be one word from there. I’ve used this word for my start word a few times…too bad it wasn’t today.

Took me forever to see third. Had to stop and come back to it twice. I even attempted to play U-turn first, but thankfully Wordle rejected it as not a word. I didn’t see anything else it could possibly be.
QUIRT came to mind, but it’s a bit off the beaten track for the NYT; wouldn’t surprise me if it had been on Wardle’s list. But it’s the only word I could think of besides the solution, given your first two words.

Yeah I saw that too but dismissed it out of hand as a valid guess but not a valid answer. I probably shouldn’t have; it’s a perfectly innocent word in the context of horseback riding.
