I made another bumble-head move…played the T in last spot again when it didn’t go there. 
Not sure I could have gotten this in 3-4 guesses anyways…there were 5 words to choose from after my second word (not including the words I had that ended in T), and I avoided the N due to it showing up twice in last two days.

Somehow when I was working on this I didn’t think we’d see so many minty ninths.
I don’t know about highest and lowest words, but WordleBot said that for hard mode, DANCE was something like a 3.2 average, while the average number of guesses for today’s word was 4.2. And that looks about right looking at the posts for today: no 2s, a few 3s, more 4s, some 5s.

As I said to my wife, this wasn’t an obscure or difficult word, I was just looking in all the wrong places. If anything about the word threw me off, it was the three consecutive consonants in the middle of the word. Once I knew the word began with A, I was looking for words with another vowel in the middle.

I figured ADDLE was unlikely, and AMPLE, if wrong, would lead me to AMBLE, APPLE, or ANKLE in four, easy peasy.
But, I’d missed seeing ANGLE, so a five was still possible. It worked out, but just goes to show that in this game it’s difficult to cover all the ANGLEs.

ROUSE → And that went… almost nowhere. Guess it’s time to try A…
GLADE → and L. But where do they go? If I dare a repeat letter, I could exchange their places…
VALVE → but that wasn’t right. Do I dare another repeat letter, with only two guesses left? What the heck, YOLO…

I left the game after my second guess and in the middle of the night, the solution came to me. Except that it could have been apple, ample, or maple. And I guessed right!
