ONION → Too much to hope for for an O or N, I guess. Now I have to worry about a double I… but later
TIRES → No E. Do I have an -IT ending?
PLAIT → Yes! I only see one possibility
AWAIT
I tried Scoredle, following its suggestions after the initial guess, and it finished in 6.
I might’ve seen it but I knocked it out with my second guess if I’d been the son of a son of a sailor. (RIP, Jimmy. )

I played this one all wrong. After three I saw a ton of options including BIDDY, BILLY, WILLY, FILLY, FIZZY, DIZZY, JIFFY,DIVVY, JIGGY. Instead of listing them and realizing that I should probably check the F, D and B (BIFID), I panicked, entered most of the remaining letters into an anagram finder and chose the word with four of them. That left me with only two choices. I also considered that there might not be a double letter but couldn’t come up with an option. So a totally undeserved five but I did learn that DWALM is apparently a word.

There were quite a number of possibles after my third try, of which I only discerned JIFFY, BIDDY and GIDDY. I picked the most likely of those three and it turned out to be the answer. WordleBot shared that BIGGY, FIGGY, JIGGY, DIZZY and FIZZY were also potentials. I suspected there were more than the ones I found but didn’t take a lot of time over it today. So lucky again.

Considering I had exactly zero letters after my first two words, I certainly wasn’t going to get it in 3, so I’m happy with a 4.
I’ve got two different words, DUMPY and GIMPY (hi, Chefguy!), that I use on the third guess if I’m still fishing for letters. The one I didn’t choose would have gotten me more of the solution, but since the one I chose got me there in 4, I’m not complaining. I chose the one I did to eliminate any possible QU words, but looking at Scoredle, there weren’t any of them left anyway after my second guess.
AWAIT → Slow start, comcons and move that I
STILE → But don’t repeat comcons! Doh! So, an N… but I don’t see an R word, so I’ll try
WINDY → and since I’m up to my fourth guess, I’ll try a double letter
BIDDY → I think I’m safe, I’m positively
GIDDY
Some misplaying, but a fair five - this is a tough word by most methods.
