PHONY → Strikeout. Time for a second-guess classic
TEARS → Perhaps ??AIR would work, but I can’t see much to fit in there. On the other hand, ?RAI? could be
FRAIL → Soooooo close. I’ll hand in my Monty Python fan card now.
GRAIL
FRAIL/GRAIL club now up to five members.
Done. (After I’d already solved the puzzle before opening this thread, of course!)

GRAIL
I saw FRAIL, but GRAIL just seemed more Wordle-ey.
Yeah, I figure most of us solve it before opening the thread, just to keep from inadvertently picking up a hint. But just in case, I figured it would be better if that reference was cloaked. So thanks for stepping in!

The poor letter F hasn’t gotten any love for a while. There were 0 in August, only 1 in September, and none this month with only one day left. That is why I went with Frail over Grail, hoping it finally would get to see the light of day. Happy with a 3 regardless, and looks like I’m in good company with choosing Frail before Grail.

I would have said to check more common letters first but it would not have helped. Luckily I think there were only two possibilities left after four.

Man, look at all these 2s and 3s already! After my starting word, there were way too many possibilities out there to just go for it on 2. After my second word, with help from the past solutions list, I was down to Alley, Bleak, Gleam, and Plead, all perfectly decent possibilities. If you guess one of the last three on 3, you’ve got a 1/4 chance of a 3, a 2/4 chance of a 4 (since you’ll know after 3 whether or not it’s Alley), and a 1/4 chance of a 5. (And Alley on 3 would leave a possible 6.)
Hating getting 5s more than I like getting 3s, I went for the guaranteed 4: my sleuth word on 3 nailed down which of the four was the solution.

GRAIL → Two letters found is not a bad start. I guess GHOST is out, though. Try an E, and two more comcons
LANES → Yeah it’s a plural, and yeah I missed on the S, but at least the E worked. Really need to place these. Could be DELAY, or
CLEAT → Looks a little trappish. On the bright side, not many letters left to go before the L. Try one
PLEAD → Hmm things look a bit
BLEAK
Scoredle says I should have tried MAPLE for my third guess, so I lucked out there.

And you’re right, I never look at this thread until I’ve solved for the day. I don’t look at flags for this thread until then, either. But if I do see a flag, I try to hurry up and solve so I can spoiler if necessary, in case our assigned Game Room mods aren’t available.

Looks like @BobLibDem and I took virtually the same path. WordleBot was churlish. It attributed my second try to “luck” more than “skill,” and I thought that was unnecessarily rude. I did think quite a bit about which word to try after my opening. Not that WordleBot would ever credit it!
