LARGE → I thnk I’ll go with one vowel and three comcons for the followup… except I can’t think of a word that does that. Well, then, two comcons and another not-rare consonant…
STRIP → O or U left? And I still need to get that N. THRON/THRUN? Ouch. N?RTH makes me go “Hmmmmm…”
NORTH

I was lucky I obsessed over the N because Scoredle shows a lot of alternatives where an N is not featured. At least it wasn’t BURNT which would have left me with par (and ashes).

Well, I’m just on fire lately.

IRATE
NORTH

IRATE left only 5 words (I later learned from WordleBot). With the ‘T’ in the fourth position, I figured the last letter could only be an ‘H’ or a ‘Y’. I decided to play with ‘H’ words first, and of the available 3 words – WORTH, FORTH and NORTH, I was most interested to learn about the ‘N’. So NORTH it was – and turned out to be the answer! Although I admit if I’d seen RUSTY first, I’d have tried that one before NORTH. Never saw it because I hadn’t started playing with ‘Y’ words.

I guess the bot includes past solutions in its count, since

FORTH and RUSTY have both been used. (I presume FORTY was the bot’s 5th possible solution.)

I’m guessing RUNTY and PURTY aren’t on the solutions list.

I didn’t screw this one up per se, but didn’t play it particularly well either, leaving both N and T untried until four.
Broke a five-day three streak that I probably should have kept going. Time to start another one, I guess.

It was actually WORTH. And you’re right – the bot does include past solutions in its count. WORTH was also such a one.

Right again.

SLANT
CHORE
TWEAK

Given what I had after 2, I really wasn’t expecting to be able to pull a 3 out of this; I was more in ‘what’s the best way to save a 4’ mode. But there really was only one word - maybe two - that worked, much to my surprise.

Summary

I had one consonant and two vowels, and usually that allows for a fair number of possibilities. TWEAK came to mind early, but there are 30 ways you can legally arrange the A,E,T that I had, so I wrote them all down (yes, I am that geeky  ), figuring some more possible solutions would jump out at me. Instead, I saw a lot of words ending in the excluded -ED suffix, like (BDFGM)ATED and TA(MPX)ED. Looking at Scoredle’s list of possibilities afterwards, the only other words that remotely seemed like possibilities were (ahoy there) MATEY, and DETAG which is something I could see Wardle including in his list (given early solutions like UNMET) but the NYT saying ‘nah, let’s drop this one.’

I’d hope that MATEY is on the solutions list, though. And that it’s the solution on Talk Like A Pirate Day.
