STAKE → What a difference a day makes. So I got hung up here on what my second word should be - RONIL was one of the nonexistent candidates - and eventually decided to try just two of my remaining WoFcons, and thus
WRONG → which was closer to right than I expected. However, there was a trap involved, which I decided to try in alphabetical order
BROWN → Nope.
CROWN
CORNY is Scoredle’s second word, which is just about perfect for the purpose (and a little lucky) - so it birdies the puzzle. I think I should look more for Y-words in general.

READY (Vowel hunt!)
HOURI (every little bit helps, I guess)
GROWN (I’ll concede, that was quite lucky)
DECAF (the sleuth word)
CROWN
Holy crap, I did not see today’s massive trap at all. I just happened to see crown and immediately guessed it. Brown/crown/drown/frown/grown…yikes. if I had taken half a second to look for possibilities I would have noticed the trap, listed them all, and then by my rules guessed frown first. I might have even had to burn a guess on a sleuth word. (I haven’t checked whether any of those have been previous answers.)

Foolish unforced error there at 3 replaying the yellow L in second position. Immediately went with the first thing I saw like yesterday. Unfortunately I went so quickly I didn’t make sure it was a valid guess.

CROWN → Second leadoff strikeout in a row. Time for a good first guess second…
STALE → OK, that’s a little better. Still need another vowel. U, I or a second E? I thought about I words first, otherwise I would have tried FLUTE. Instead, it was
LITHE
Two major options left for the third guess. Scoredle, oddly enough, tries to double up on a letter that hasn’t even been used before, and takes a par because of it. I’m often amazed at how well Scoredle does with its “repeated letter” strategy, but applying it to a letter that you don’t even know is present at all? Seems like madness to me.
