NANNY
I am actually proud of thinking this through. After the trap at two I tried a couple of common letters then was left with a few options including NANNY, CANNY, FANNY (unlikely), FANCY, HANKY, WANKY (unlikely). CANNY would probably also have narrowed it down to one of the four likeliest options but I knew I needed to check the N in the fourth spot and a C somewhere. Meanwhile everybody else will probably easily get this in three.

PLANT
EARNS
FANNY
NANNY
Pretty happy with earns for the second word. This is the first time plant has returned a green N and yellow A.
Saw fanny first but immediately discarded it because of the British meaning, and I know wordle’s roots skew British. Quickly saw canny but that’s already been an answer. Then I thought I went through the whole alphabet, but of course the tricky triple hid from me. Eventually I convinced myself that “fanny pack” was mainstream enough to guess fanny. (I essentially guessed pussy because pussy willow is mainstream enough. Rolls eyes.)

HUMID → Not sure why I expected I’d do better there but I did
ROAST → One out of ten. Moving on… L,N, and E should figure in my next guess
GLEAN → One success. Perhaps a double letter?
CANNY → Yes. Only one word left
FANNY → What? Panny? Janny? No way. Oh. Triple letter
NANNY
Been racking up the sixes lately.

NANNY
Forced to abandon the chance for a four and go sleuth. CHADS eliminated all but NANNY and FANNY. I almost went with FANNY before deciding it was unlikely. Triple letter, though… ![]()
Properly spoilering this time, regarding today’s puzzle, I checked to see if FANNY is in the original answers list. (I don’t have the updated NYT answer list.)
Answer: FANNY is indeed a valid answer. Not surprised, I guess, because like I said upthread, “fanny pack” is a pretty mainstream expression.

FANNY
NANNY
Triple letter? Seriously?
I didn’t try FANNY because Wordle creator is Welsh and fanny has a different, female specific meaning here in the UK. Maybe he included it with a slight snigger to himself, or maybe he had spent too much time living in Brooklyn.
Thanks for the spoilering! I wasn’t sure if it would be enough to keep me from clicking anyway, but it was. So I’m good with your doing it this way, and I appreciate your remembering to do so.
