"Wordle," a strangely compelling word game (Part 2)

Yeppers, that’s the word.

And while I won’t say I dread that day, I know that first day it happens will give us fits. And make things a bit more challenging after that. But mostly I just wonder how deep into the list they’ll go before reopening all the past solutions. My WAG awhile back was 40% of the way through the list; we’d hit that mark right around the new year, assuming ~2300 words on the list. We’re about at 31.5% now.

I probably wouldn’t even notice if they started reusing words at some point, unless it was one of those really annoying words like parer or piney

CRIME → Not a bad start. Feel like I need more vowels… and there’s a word with both A & U I can try…
MAUVE → Hit on the A! But now it feels like a two-letter trap. Probably shouldn’t try this one but I hate not trying for T…
MATTE → Nope. N is still out there…
MANGE → Nope. How about L?
MAPLE → One guess left. MAIZE is already gone, but maybe… Oh…
MAYBE

This one just felt too weird to me.

Well, as a fellow quordle player – and its offshoot sister-game “sequence” – we are already well used to it, since both of those games allow duplicates aplenty.

For the Wordle-only players, imagine this: duplicates in quordle & sequence are so common that a few weeks ago there was a duplicate answer two days in a row in the same game in the same location. Sequence, bottom right, same word two days in a row!

Summary

Obviously getting a green and two yellows on the first guess was big, but I did a good job of identifying the possible solutions before my second guess, and coming up with a great second word to narrow it down to just the solution.

Scoredle had 43 possible words after my first guess, but of course most of those were junk. But I was pleased with how many I’d found on my own, including the dubious ones. Legit words STEAD (already used), STEAK, STEAM, STRAP, STRAW, STRAY, and SATYR, legit but IMO unlikely SATAY, SITAR, and SUTRA, proper nouns and acronyms SATAN, SITKA, and SEPTA, slang SISTA and SORTA, and STRAG which is the word for non-hitchhiker in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I missed legit word SAUTE (it’s used often enough without the accent, IMHO) and KJV refugee SAITH, but that was about it. And WIMPY narrowed it down to just STRAP. (Too many traps to shoot for the solution on the second guess.)

Yep, and if you play all three everyday after awhile it becomes impossible to remember what words were used when and where.
Also I don’t use the previous words list simply because I feel it would restrict my choice of words too much, some of which might help me to solve the puzzle faster. Like what happened with your wordle yesterday.

Nice!
