YEAST (Probably ?A??Y. Add some WoFcons?)
RANDY (Well, at least I placed A and Y. There’s one more WoFcon.)
BALMY (Good enough for a birdie.)
MACHO → M and placed A is a nice start. Would like to try E, and two WoFcons, and I see one possible word which may not be maximally lame, but is
LAMER → than other words. Let’s see, ?ALM?, it has been a bit warm around here lately
BALMY
Sometimes you get the early letter, and a birdie; other times, you don’t and it’s bogeyville. In Scoredle’s case, today, a lower obsession with WoFcons led to a guess of GAMER on the second guess, which left just enough uncertainty to miss a 50-50 birdie chance.

MANLY and MANGY were also possible, and any of the three, if wrong, would have eliminated one of the other two. So I couldn’t have done worse than a bogey, and got a bit lucky for the par.

I suspect that the used word list might have helped. Also I really need to check vowels. I’m not sure there was a guaranteed solve in hard mode. Oh well, back to zero.

After 2, I figured the solution had the form TRvcE or cRvTE. For the latter, I came up with BRUTE and WRITE, both of which had been used, and for the former, TRIBE, TRICE, TRIKE, TRIPE, TRITE, and TRUCE, of which TRICE and TRITE had been used. Went with TRIBE on 3, and took TRIPE over TRIKE on 4.

50-50 chance after two - GRIPE or TRIPE. Of course I picked the wrong one.
Good question! I don’t play hard mode because I’m just not going to tell myself ‘I know ways to solve this puzzle faster, but I’m not going to use them just because.’ And traps are part of that, of course. And I maintain a used words spreadsheet, which has advantages over a list.
But suppose I’d decided to play hard mode today, and I’d accidentally deleted my spreadsheet and had no idea which words had been used already?
My priorities in checking letters are (a) the WoFcons, (b) E,A,O which are the most common vowels (I know this because spreadsheet ), and (c) after that, consonants in rough order of frequency: C,H,D,P,G,M, etc. (Ditto. I may not remember past solutions, but I’m not going to forget what I know about letter frequencies.) I figure I can fill in an I or U later if I’m missing a vowel. But checking the ‘big three’ vowels usually narrows things down a lot.
So after my starting word SLANT I have a yellow T, and that’s all. I still need to take it on the run, baby, and check R,E,O. TR is a natural starting combo for a word, and P>V so TROPE rather than TROVE.
If the solution is TRIPE, I get lucky. But suppose it’s one of those other TR possibilities: TRIBE, TRICE, TRIKE, TRITE, and TRUCE. Even if I’m a lousy guesser, if I pick one of the TRIxE words, I’ll get it in 6 at worst. (I’d have probably gone TRITE-TRIBE-TRIKE-TRICE, unless the I didn’t go green in which case TRUCE on 4. So if the solution is TRICE, I get a 6.)
