Oh wow! I had more than a dozen possibilities. I just choose that because it has a lot of good letters and a vowel and a consonant in good places.
CRANE
HOIST
GUNKY
Edited to add: wordlebot says i only had 4 words that could have been wordle answers. Huh, i would have thought more. This is a funny word-space for it, i think. And also, it would have chosen the elimination word, “PROOF” to guarantee a win in 5.
SHEEP → Whiff. It’s not really a good first word, but I decided to try a different combination and here’s what Wordle accepted
ALOIN → Not far from a double-whiff. So there’s U and Y left of the vowels, and three WoFcons, but I only engaged two with
RUNNY → and I could have tried RUNTY and gotten them all, so seeing that I wanted to try a T and went for
BUNTY → and as a white boy, I want to play some music really
FUNKY → and I’m really close, but I can see two possiblities here, and G looks a little slangy so
JUNKY
A 50-50 right at the end there, according to Scoredle. Scoredle itself wins in five, and doesn’t even touch two of the WoFcons to get a largely elimination-based win.
Seeing today’s carnage, I’m glad I at least kept it in bounds. After 3, I saw FUNKY, GUNKY, and JUNKY, but I discounted the latter two enough that I went with FUNKY even knowing it had previously been used. Then I lost the mental coin toss between the other two. Such is life.
H, G, J, or P (I thought B might be in the mix too, but not according to Scordle). I didn’t want to risk it, and did what turned out to be the right thing. Sorry to those of you who went down yesterday.
Wordle 1,722 5/6
BRAKE
STONE
LODGE
VOUGE
VOGUE
This is what happens when I Wordle before coffee.
I had the par in the bag, then brain-farted. While I take full responsibility for my idiocy, I’m surprised the misspelling was accepted. Mirriam-Webster doesn’t recognize it.
this is the second day in a row when i hit a birdie when just trying to split the field. I thought there were 13 plausible words that would fit after the first two guesses, of which 6 were almost certainly on wordle’s list. (The wordle bot says 7 words, the 6 i liked most plus one of the others i was looking at, bogie.) I liked Vogue because it would place the o, and test whether v, g, and u were in the word. This looked like the most useful word to place of the 13, in terms of differentiating the others. And… BINGO!
GUNKY → Not what I would have expected, but very useful. Jumping out at me are VOGUE/VAGUE/ROGUE and
ROUGE → So, if that was all the valid words, it must be VOGUE
Words ending in H was the category I missed seeing for the second guess, so I got rather lucky in general terms but it was a skillful play otherwise - my second guess was second on Scoredle’s list of 88 possibles. It could have gone south for the second day in a row, though, if I hadn’t cottoned to my earlier oversight and hit a very rough trap. Scoredle also hits a birdie; with three valids left after its second guess, it dives into a trap to try to save a win, and hits the one valid word in that trap. If the solution was one of the other words, a five was possible. Nice bounceback after yesterday!
