Wracked my brains for something with an A for a few minutes. I came up empty and moved on to U; that’s when the a-ha moment came.

POINT
ICING - This should have been a two, as it was the only word possible given my first guess. I just couldn’t see it, even after of mentally manipulating the ‘c’ and the ‘n’ with the remaining vowels. ‘Point’ gave me a vowel, but I still couldn’t see it for like ten minutes.
SQUID → Add an E and 3 WoFcons, shake up and sort out. I like an IN- prefix here, so
INLET → Good guess. R is still live, and A would be the next vowel to check - IRANI probably doesn’t work, but it does lead to the almost-as-good near-rhyme
IRONY → And here I sat and thought for a while. Couldn’t see anything. Kept trying to put a K on the end, to no avail Put it aside and worked a crossword, and one of the clues led me right to the answer
ICING
I was hoping for GAMES today, but no luck. Scoredle wins in three from its usual start, but takes a loss from my start - falls into the trap ??ING with its third guess and can’t get out of it. Makes me feel a lot more relived that I found the initial letter rather than the one in the middle…

I thought I played this one rather poorly, and maybe I did, but Scordle fails from my start word as well. So I must have done something right.
