I’ll take ‘words I had no idea existed’ for $400, Alex! I was lucky that I went with ORATE rather than PRATE at 2, because without the initial O, I’d have been lost. As it was, I tried every available letter in the 2-spot. When I finally settled on OVATE, I figured it was the verb form of ‘ovation’ rather than a word meaning ‘egg-shaped’ as it turned out to be when I looked it up. (I guess there’s some subtle distinction between ‘ovate’ and ‘ovoid’ which I was already aware of.)

I was between GRATE, CRATE, IRATE, and ORATE. I went with a word with an opening vowel, as it felt more Wordle-y to me, and got lucky going with the O.

This was another case where, as the last possible guess, I put in a sequence of letters that looked something like it could be a word, and was surprised that it was.

GRATE → Here I stalled for a while, ran out of any possibles off the top of my head, so started to look for plausible words, and decided to try

A bit of luck at the end. There were two other words, both bogus, but my third guess cut it down from seven valid and 12 bogus words, so that was a solid choice (and it was rated 2/19, so that worked well). Scoredle also finishes in four, via what seems to be to be a circuitous route to the answer, but it got there.

Getting the -ATE early was a curse, not a blessing. The smart move would have been abandoning hard mode at that point, but I (correctly) figured I wouldn’t run out of guesses. I just wasn’t particularly lucky.
