Most of the possibles after 1 had already been played, leaving SPATE, STACK, STAMP, STAPH, and STAVE. Worst case with STAMP would have been down to STACK and STAVE on 3.

LADLE → Time for a good first word second, and I have just the one here
ROAST → That certainly looks like a trap in the making. STAU? goes nowhere (except for Rusty STAUB, former MLB player) but I really should try the last WoFcon and an I, and I have just the word for it
STAIN → Yep, trap. And pretty much guarantee no Y. What should I try first?
STACK → Nope. Hmm. Oh, that would have been better before this one, better late than never
STAPH → Aha. I think I’ve saved the win

STAFF and STAGY were also possibles after the fourth guess, and while my fifth guess was a good one, I might still have ended in a fail. As I spotted just after it happened, my fourth guess only eliminated one out of the twelve possibles. Scoredle solves it in four from my start, which is better than it does from its own start, where it hits the trap on the second guess and then fails to solve in six.

Not bad, I guess, after the opening whiff. Could have been STAMP, STASH, or STAFF, so I’ll take a bit of luck today.
