Such things are called “sight rhymes” or “eye rhymes.” My favorite is laughter/slaughter.

It doesn’t? Is “bade” one of those words that I’ve only ever seen in print and hence never learned to pronounce correctly?

Weird, I checked a dictionary and it says it’s pronounced identically to “bad”. Though I’ve only ever heard it as rhyming with “made” or “paid.”

WTF? I’ve also only heard it as “baid.” Dictionary.com only has the “bad” pronunciation. Merriam-Webster has both, with “bad” as the first and “baid” as the second. Wiktionary has “baid” as the first, and “bad” as the second. I don’t think I’ve ever heard this word pronounced as anything but “baid” (not that I’ve heard it that often in speech.)

Strangely, I’ve only heard it pronounced correctly, same as “bad.”
