My co-worker, Rob the Aussie, is getting ready to return to the Land Down Under. He’s been looking for information on how to resign from the University. Having no luck, he asked for my assistance. (I do the lab’s books and had some HR system training.)
It took longer than I thought. Doing a site search for “resignation” turned up nothing. After contacting HR, I discovered that employees don’t resign, or even quit, they “check out.” :dubious: Sounds like a some sort of criminal euphemism to me.
“Checking out” is the process. If he’s a faculty member (as opposed to a student), he should have to formally resign, and give notice, as well. I, too, had to “check out” on my last day at my campus job, and before graduation. It basically entailed getting forms signed for the post office, key control, the cashier, etc., basically saying my account balances were zero and the university could release my transcript. I wouldn’t consider “checking out” a “pariphrase”, as its something you have to do (or have done for you) if you’re fired, laid off, quit, etc.
Getting canned would be pretty bad, though, especially if they couldn’t find a jar big enough, and had to amputate your limbs!
