I agree. The piece that won seemed very obvious and too literal.
I really like this show. China Chow’s name and wardrobe amuse me as does Simon’s sincere ethusiasm. Yeah I suppose some of it’s bullshit but at least it’s heads above the trainwreck that was last season’s Project Runway. Even Sucklord seems human and vaguely empathetic if not even remotely much of an artist.
I love Work of Art. I love Simon De Pury. I’m so glad it came back for a second season. I like the Sucklord, especially that Jerry Saltz hates him. Too bad he’s such a shitty artist and won’t be around much longer.
Adding to my enjoyment every week have been the AV Club reviews. This week Young stops by in the comments to defend himself (all the way at the end)!
Pretty lackluster season, I thought. There were some pretty cool challenges, but the artists generally failed to make the most of those opportunities. Like the graffiti wall, or the street art challenge. They just seemed like a very unimaginative group, from the very beginning.
In fact, the overall lasting impression I got from this season was not about the art itself, but about how most of these people are so much “in their own heads” that they have trouble producing art that others can relate to. Or they just wind up slapping something together at the last minute, like throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks.
As for the finale, I liked Sara’s collection and I can appreciate Kymia’s skill and vision even though it’s not to my taste. But Young kind of puzzles me. I know art is completely subjective and all, but to me he was one of the least creative contestants through the whole season. He was apparently one of the more accomplished artists (resumé-wise) on the show, but I saw very little vision from him. His work for the finale was really uninspired.
And what the hell is up with Young’s hair?! It’s like a combination bird’s nest/mullet. I can understand (sort of) Dusty the teacher from Arkansas sporting a mullet, but a gay guy who has traveled the world and run art galleries can’t get a better 'do than that?
I saw most of the episodes. Really wasn’t impressed with any of these artists. Youngs showpiece was so typical of the terrible art this season. He actually hung a clothesline, including the clothes, in a prestigious art gallery? He had the nerve to call that art?
I like Sara’s bird costume and the notes she collected with it. I’m not so sure that really was an art piece. But, the tree she made from the notes was pretty nice.
Kymia’s art? I just saw this episode two days ago and can’t even remember what she did.
Lola’s best art was her nekkid picture. Geez that girl has some big droopy tits. <shallow> Can’t help it, cause I’m a guy and she’s hot.
