Workin' 9 to 5...or 8 to 4?

All across the clock…

GM of a cafe …we also do overnight production.

8 to 5, one hour unpaid lunch.

Neither. I work 12 noon to 8pm.

Mostly when I feel like getting there, unless there is a specific project that requires being there at a certain time. Depending upon my other job, and what I’m doing on that day, I arrive anywhere between 7-9:30 am. Sometimes I don’t even go to work at all, but work from home.

this

Ah, not common… I prefer 8 to 4, but I’ve worked all kinds of hours and I’m currently out of work.

I had a job which was supposed to be 9 to 5, my boss accepted a change to 8 to 4 (which meant 1-2 hours less in the car, daily), then HR yelled at us saying it had to be 9 to 5:30, and in any case I ended up working 10h-6h-10-6-10-6… because it was best for the synthetic work I was doing, and reporting 9-5:30 to HR.

I had another which was supposed to be 9 to 5, but my boss moved me to 11 to 7 :frowning: that sucked donkey balls, as it meant I couldn’t do my shopping before work, couldn’t do my shopping after work, had to do my shopping on Saturday morning, along with what seemed to be half the region.

I don’t think I’ve ever in my life worked a shift that remotely resembled either of those. In the city that never sleeps, 9-5 jobs (or anything within 2 hours of that) are a freaking LUXURY.

8:30 to 5:00
because there is a 30 minute lunch break that is unpaid. It’s the closest I’ll ever get to 9 to 5

I set my own hours. It’s currently 5:45 a.m. and I’m working. (A report is compiling.)

At my previous job, I worked 8 - 5 with an hour unpaid lunch. I agitated constantly for a half hour lunch and a an 8:30 start but that was never an option, even though the people I reported to never arrived before 9.

I own a retail store. The posted hours are 10-6, five days a week.

Most days I go in earlier and stay later than that.

I’d say roughly 7 am to 10 or 11 pm, with big gaps in between for stuff like eating, drinking, posting to the SDMB, etc.

2AM till noon on Mondays, 5AM till 3PM Tue, Wed, Thu, off Fri, Sat, Sun.

I work from 07:30 to 16:00

6 am to 9 pm.

Wow, some folks are putting in some major hours!

I start 7, done by 3. Still have some daylight to play with.

8:00-4:30 with a half hour lunch, actually.

Generally 8 to 5, but in practice it’s more like 8:15 to 5:30. I’m exempt so I don’t really track my hours very carefully.

It was 8 - 430, then some days I changed to 7 - 330, then we switched to an alternate work environment. Now I can work whenever, Mon - Sat, as long as I get 40 hours in. The only drawback is production is up from 630am - 7pm, so while I can work after 7pm, it’s in inquiry only.

7:20-4:30 I’d get in earlier but I have an hour commute. My last Job was 6:00 - 3:00 and that was fantastic.

What I would have said.

Also, I have worked 12-hour shifts all over the clock as well as night shifts of seven and eight hours.

“9 to 5” is a myth as far as I know.

I did not participate in the poll.
