Over my career, every full-time job I’ve ever had has been from 8-5 with an hour unpaid lunch. Does anyone still work 9 to 5? And if so how does that work? Do you have a paid lunch, or do you get not take one, work 7 hours or what?
Essentially, what ever happened to ‘being on the job from 9 to 5’?
(I was reading the thread about Porter Wagoner’s death, which led me to read a bit about Dolly Parton which got me thinking about the song and movie 9 to 5…see, there was a thought process involved here. )
My current schedule is something close to 9 to 5. I used to get in earlier, but they closed the morning pre-school program at my son’s school, so I have to take him in later. I just generally work while I eat.
Since I don’t get paid for taking time off for lunch, I don’t take a lunch. I do work more than eight hours each day, although not significantly more and I also don’t charge for that extra 15 to 20 minutes.
We get a half hour unpaid lunch, so our hours are 8:00 (or 9:00) to 4:30 (or 5:30): your choice. I’m closer to 9:30 to 6:00, since I have to get the kids on the bus in the morning.
Ditto here. I have, though, had a couple of 9-5 jobs. At some of the non-profits I’ve worked at, I was scheduled for 7.5 hours and took a 30-minute lunch.
It was my understanding that it was a downstate/New York City thing, and just in large corporations. I never have worked 9-5 and somehow survived til the night, myself. It’s always been 8 to 5 or 8 to 4:30.
In my company 35 hours is considered full time. Therefore most employees work 7 hours per day with an hour for lunch if they work 8-4. Some prefer to work 40 hours per week and work 8-5. As long as the extra five hours are productive ones and I don’t have to pay time and a half, that’s fine with me.
My job generally works out to somewhere between 8 and 9 to 5 at the latest. I rarely take work home with me. I could get there at 9 if I wanted to, but I like that little bit to unwind at my desk with a cup of coffee, preparing for the day ahead.
I’m a public defender. My office may not be typical for the norm for our profession. There are days when I’ve left at 2:00 and nobody bats an eye. As long as you get the work done and represent all your clients to the best of your ability, there’s no point in sticking around the office surfing the internet for three hours. Some days you don’t have that much to do, and others you’re running around like crazy all day long.
I come in at 9 and leave at 5. I usually eat lunch with my team out of the office for about 45 minutes. However, I also do some off-hours support so I probably put in more than 40/week all told.
The only time I worked 9 to 5 was when I knew I was leaving a job shortly and I didn’t care any more. I’m usually in earlier and out later. 9 to 5 would be a dream.
I’ve never worked 9-5, but then again, this is not a 9-5 company. We do subtitles/dubbing/game localization. Currently I work from 10:30am - 7pm. However, there are people here as early as 5am, and the night shift leaves around 3:30am. Only one department, the client reps, is instructed to be in the office by a certain time; for everyone else, it’s pretty flexible. As long as your work is done, it’s not really an issue what hours you’re actually here.
Hi, I work 9 to 5. I technically work a 35 hour week. Most of the time I take my full hour lunch. I have a very busy workday but nothing I can’t finish in seven hours, I am one efficient little monkey most of the time.
When it gets busy, I am salaried and thus expected to skip my lunch/work extra/what-have-you. We have a fundraiser Thursday night and I will probably be working from 9 AM to 10 PM and will not get reimbursed the extra time, though I will probably be allowed to have a day off in compensatory time next week.
I don’t make a lot of money but time off is fabulous. We have lots of vacation and sick time, and they just gave us from Dec 24 to the 2nd of January off - namely, the week between Christmas and New Year.
I’ve never had a job that started as late as 9am, nor have I held a job that had anything but a half-hour unpaid lunch. Most have started between 7 and 8am and ended between 3 and 4pm. (one summer job was 2nd shift, though, also with a half hour lunch). I wondered about that song too, because I find it hard to believe most people actually work 9 to 5 these days.
Most of my jobs have been of the 8 to 5 type with an hour unpaid lunch. Hours varied, but were in general 9 hours, so that I was getting paid for 8 hours with the one hour unpaid lunch in the middle.
I did have one job where I worked 5am to 1pm (stock market close on the west coast). We were salaried and just took breaks whenever we could depending on how the market was going. I loved that job.
I’m working 9 to 5 (what a way to make a living…). I eat lunch at my desk while on the clock and sometimes I work overtime when needed and I will go home early if I have worked myself out of things to do.
