Working 9 to 5?

I worked with my mother in law for three years at a 9-5. She’s less than two years away from retiring, so that’s been her schedule for years. Granted, she often works later than 5:00 and doesn’t get paid O/T, but she can also take off time for appointments and such without losing pay. It’s not officially a salaried job, but it really is, I guess.

8:30 to 4:30 with an hour unpaid lunch. I leave the premises for that hour, even if I go out to my car and sit there, undisturbed.

I work 9-5:30 most days, with a lunch hour. That means I work less than 40 hours a week.

7-3:30 for myself. I usually get to work about 6:40. I eat at work and usually bring my lunch in or get something and come back and eat at my desk. I have my own little refridge in my cube.

The other guys take the hour lunch at noon or so. It works well since I can be there and cover lunchtime and keep the office open to answer questions and take care of the public walk-ins.

I work for small US county government. It works pretty well since we don’t want to close down in the middle of the day.

I am one of those obnoxious coworkers with young children. I am a professional in a mega-corp but I don’t ask about my hours, I just tell because I have to. I basically function as a single parent during the week because my wife works 1 1/2 hours away. I usually work from 8:45 am to 4:45 pm with a one hour lunch for exercise. I can do that because I am close to an indispensable employee and I am not apologetic about any of it.

OTOH, I have worked plenty of nights and weekends even on emergency notice. I don’t think anyone is keeping score but that type of thing helps with work cred and flexibility during normal periods.

My favorite (lack of) work story is when the major supermarket chain I worked for got sold. I was a corporate manager and all of my bosses all the way to the top got canned. I was left with no bosses and a big fat retention bonus for 4 1/2 months. Occasionally I would go into work (in a big empty building) and screw around for an hour or two. Most days, I would just check my voicemail once a day to see if the acquisition team needed anything. I probably put in 40 hours of work over those 4 1/2 months and made the most I have ever made in one year.

That spoiled me and I never agree to strictly set hours anymore.

I’m 9 to 5, with a half hour for lunch.

I usually get there between 8:40 and 9:00 a.m., and take about 15-20 minutes for lunch. Lately, I leave on the dot at five, as it’s slower now, but in the busy time, I will stay later and I also have worked from home on the weekends, gone in on the weekend, or have done some catching up by logging on from my home computer.

I’m salaried, and have no hesitation about taking off an hour or so for a medical appointment. I make up for it at other times.

Our stated hours are 8:30 to 4:45, but my usual day goes from 7:45 to 6:00pm or so, sometimes when it’s crunch time it’s 6:30am to 7:00pm, which are the hours that our building is open. I don’t take a lunch, but I do play around here and take as many cigarette breaks as I’ve decided are enough (usually three a day)

7:00am untill. Usually around 6:30 or 7:00pm plus8:00 till noon on saturday. I am also on call for emerency service 24/7. On the bright side if I get called in after hours it’s at least $200 cash (for the first hour and $50/hr after that). I do get a lot of down time during the day on the clock, but some days it’s balls to the wall. I just never know ahead of time.

I get to work about seven, and leave sometime after five in the afternoon. I take a half-hour for lunch. We’re entitled to two 20-minute breaks, but I don’t take mine. I’m told I should leave 40 minutes early, but it just doesn’t feel ‘right’. The bad news is that the office is 100 miles from my house. The good news is that I only work four days a week.

And I telecommute Mondays.

The law firm I work for uses 7.5 hour work days. Technically, my schedule is 8am - 4pm with a half hour lunch. However, I’m salaried and often work past 4pm. The non-salaried staff stick to their schedule pretty rigidly.

When I started there five and a half years ago, we worked 7 hour days with a half hour lunch, but they changed it to 7.5 hours because they wanted to “keep up with the industry.” <shrug>

I’ve always worked something close to 9-5. Sometimes 8-4, or 7-3, but my workday has always been either 7 hours with an hour unpaid lunch or 7.5 hours with a half-hour unpaid lunch.

I have Friday to Sunday off too. Sweet , isn’t it?

I also do a nominally 40hr week, but as I’m in publishing it’s basically “stay till the pages are sent to the printers”. And I don’t start till 10.30am, which suits me as (a) I’m not a morning person and (b) I have a long commute. So I typically do about 10.30am-7pm two days a week and 10.30am-10.30pm the other two days. Lunch (and dinner on the long days) are generally eaten on the hoof unless it’s a quiet day and I can take a break.

9 to 5 doesn’t exist in my field.
My current shifts are 4 am to 1 pm, 8 to 5; 10:30 to 7:30, or 2/3 pm to midnight.

I am salaried and my schedule is 9-5 with a paid lunch hour, so it is a 35 hour work week. I usually come in at 8:30 2-3 days a week and once a week or so I try to take a short lunch but I still come in at under 40 hours.

I would gladly put in more hours except that I have very little to do at work. Much of my time is spent here on the dope because I have long periods of time where I literally have nothing to do. Also my commute is pretty long, 1 1/2 to 2 hours each way, and I count that in my “time that I contribute to work” column in my head. (I am aware that it doesn’t count as far as my boss and coworkers are concerned, but anytime I have to leave the house before seven in the morning I am giving myself some sort of credit for that.) I am going to work or working or coming from work about 12 hours a day, 5 days a week thought my total “working” hours only add up to about 38.

10 to 5 for me, with an hour for lunch. That’s about all I can stand.
