When a company decides to cut hours, which group is more likely to be affected: Newer or older employees?
When an employee is stuck at an entry level position for an extended period of time, do you think that they deserve to work in other areas of the company, due to their experience? Some employees may wonder why management won’t give them more opportunities, despite them being interested.
Why do some newer employees move up or get cross trained quicker than older employees? IMO, it probably has to do with past work experience along with favoritism as well.
If you have a union contract, it will strictly depend on who was hired first; last in, first out.
If you do not have a union contract, then it will depend on who has sucked up to the person responsible for hiring/firing the most. Who is the buddy of the boss? Who plays golf with him? Who laughs at his jokes? Who gives him a BJ in the closet at the company Christmas party?
If you are interested in advancement, you have to show interest, involvement, and curiosity.
An entry-level person would ask questions: what happens to the stuff after it leaves my desk? Will you show me how to do that?
Entry-level peeps who clean up their own work area, tidy the mess at the coffeepot, and organize the supply cabinets become golden.
If you finish your work early, do NOT play with your phone. Ask a co-worker if she or he needs help. Offer to do the filing/make copies/answer the phone.
People who do these things rarely stay at an entry-level position.

I’ve heard of negative consequences as a result of company favoritism & popularity, mostly due to a lack of proper knowledge or experience for their desired position.
Ideally, yes. Doesn’t always work that way among lower level employees. Sometimes the manager will advance the person they like or even just because they’re more attractive.
I’m glad I don’t work at your shithole company. I won’t say that there aren’t isolate cases here and there, but on the whole, we develop talent based on merit. I’m talking about salaried; union guys are screwed because they’re all equal, so talent is meaningless for them. This tends to cause laziness amongst some of them.
I’m an employer who only promotes people I favor and like. I favor and like them because they are the best at their jobs and have the best chances of succeeding in positions of greater responsibility.
Tell me, Mister Fudd, if I were an entry-level employee of yours, and I did all the extra things I described upthread, would I become one of your favored and liked minions?

This. I’m a manager as well. I like the people who do a good job, show up on time and take the next step. I have never written a negative review–the worst I’ve given was average (govt), but those who are below average know it from my relationship with them. Typically the poor workers try to suck up. I make it very clear that that is not what I’m looking for. Typical responses to suck-ups are one word answers. They soon realize they will go no where unless they work, and those that don’t want to, move on quickly.
