World Cup 2018

Uruguay scores against Portugal! After an almost goal of Ronaldo, Uruguay scores in a counterattack shortly afterward, with a beautiful header courtesy of Cavani after a great pass of Suarez.

Uruguay 1 - Portugal 0.

Anyway, I watched the first half of the France-Argentina game, but had something I wanted to do this morning so I skipped the second half. :smack: I can’t believe I missed that.

Losing in the Round of 16 isn’t the same as losing the literal final.

Uruguay has done a good job of denying CR7 the ball.

Pepe 1-1

Amazing goal by Cavani.

And Cavani scores again in the counterattack! Cavani again!

Uruguay 2 - Portugal 1

Portugal seems to be having serious issues with their defense.

One thing I am liking of this World Cup is that, generally speaking, the games have been lively and with quite a bit of scoring.

Maybe it is because Italy didn’t make it and they have been unable to spread their pernicious influence re: “parking the bus”? ^.^

Man, those guys in blue, they just kind of piddle around and then boom. Portugal looks like the better team, except in that trivial little scoring part.

High scoring, a thing of beauty. May we have no 1-0 games in the knockout stage.

And may Messi and Ronaldo both exit on the same day.

Aaaand CR7 also out.

Uruguay goes to the next round, Portugal eliminated.

After Messi, CR7 misses yet again in his quest to end his career at a high point.

Put them in adjacent seats on the same plane and tape their GOAT discussion.

CR7 end the game on a high note – one with a hue of yellow. The only one in the game.

The two greatest goalscorers of the modern game exit the World Cup on the same day. Neither of them have ever scored a goal in the knock-out stages. Funny old game.

If Cavani has a calf injury, I’d say it’s highly unlikely that he can play on Friday. He was still limping around at the end.

Really? That is remarkable. Much was made how Ronaldo was dealing with the pressure much better than Messi but he couldn’t produce the goods when it really mattered. Both are obviously amazing players but their World Cup failures do put them a notch below legends like Pele and Maradona.

You don’t see the huge talent gap between Portugal and Brazil/Argentina? Its comparing apples to oranges.

I don’t think that clumping Argentina at the moment with Brazil is correct at all. In fact, Portugal are the European champs and Argentina are pretty much a disaster right now.

Greece was a recent European champ. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ronaldo has never had the level of talent around him that Argentina has. Argentina also came within inches of tying the match this morning. They are only a disaster because they have enjoyed so much past success.

Neither Brazil nor Argentina have shown particularly dazzling form as yet. Argentina obviously less so and have been rightly dumped out, but Brazil don’t look like world champs. They may turn it on but that remains to be seen.
