I agree with both of you are it embarrassed me as an American to have Geiger represent us since he seems to create discord in every match he officiated.

Referee losing control. Correction, lost control, but barely hanging on to ability to keep game going. Good spot on the penalty, though.
I agree and blame the ref for letting this match get out of control. Now that Colombia are behind things will likely get worse.
On a more positive note, the players should be fresh from standing around arguing so much.
It has been an ugly game by the Colombians from the get go, but Geiger seems very timid and not very authorative, and I’m afraid he might lose control of the game.

The English are busy diving like Tom Daley.
One of the most important aspects to refereeing a game is pre-reading the likely tenor of the game. Some games are okay refereeing by letting the game flow; others are likely to need firm control from min. one. This game was always going to be one of the latter. Geiger appears to have read that poorly.
I suppose this will force FIFAs hand and make them issue a card amnesty for the next round.
