Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes…
The dead rising from the grave!
Human sacrifice, England win on penalty kicks… mass hysteria!

Well that was unexpected.
We deserved it over the 90, we tried to play our own, patient game but it’s a hard, hard way to go out for either team. Nice to be on the right end of it for once.
The line from the movie Flushed Away (2006):
“That’s impossible!”
“England’s winning! Anything’s possible!”
OK, no-one’s done it yet so…
Carlos Valderama, Rene Higuita, Shakira, Pablo Escobar…can you hear me…Pablo Escobar, your boys took one hell of a beating!
Not sure about the Pablo Escobar reference, considering. Let’s say Gabriel Garcia Marquez took a hell of a beating, which in my opinion he thoroughly deserves.
[Oh wait, I’m thinking of the footballer Andres Escobar, rather than the drug lord. Sorry, Novelty Bobble.]
Also, sorry to be “that guy”, but the “British” media includes Welsh, Scottish, and indeed Northern Irish observers, some of whom may not be massive supporters of the England team.
“The earth splits and the entrails of a goat were found tied in square knots. The face of the sun blackens and the skies have rained down soggy potato chips.” ![]()
Didn’t stop them from having “great” narratives.
Geiger should have never gotten a high profile gig after 2015.
Whatever your comment about the British media’s “narrative” meant, I was not addressing it. I was referring to Velocity’s apparent treatment of the terms “English” and “British” as equivalent, when they are not. To Americans, this seems like nitpicking. And OK, maybe it is, a bit. But you can be sure that a lot of British people, from Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland either didn’t care whether England won or outright wanted them to lose.
ENG-GER-LUND! In all seriousness I feel this inexperienced team is on a bit of a learning curve. They should’ve found a way to put the game to bed in the ninety.
I’m normally not arsed about England, but seeing the rampant shithousery Columbia brought to that game I wanted England to bury them. Suspect a lot of neutrals will feel the same.
Tough gig for the ref but at this level you need someone with more authority - totally lost at times, and favoured England (IMHO) as a result.
I’m not a natural England supporter, but there’s lots to like about Southgate’s way of dealing with things. The team is young, and relatively free of John Terry-esque turbo-cunts, so I’m happy for them.
I also think Southgate has handled a young team quite well, and his ‘own the moment’ mantra I think has really worked. All the penalties were excellent strikes - ironically, except possibly the last one.
The one England miss was a fine save. The first Columbia miss was so close; another quarter of an inch to the left and it bounces in, another inch to the left and Pickford probably saves it.
And the final Columbia miss was a brilliant save. Glad to see England through.
now that is swearing, Short, pithy and absolutely perfect for the man in question. He really is a turbo-cunt, whatever it may be, he is it.
And the wider point is true as well. They are far from the the finished article but they are certainly growing in maturity and though this may be a tournament too soon for them I really hope the FA keep faith with Gareth Southgate for the long term.
They may go out but at least they are trying to play the game in a way that entertains me and doesn’t have me throwing things at the telly.
Did the referee allow too many subs for England in extra time or is this just another conspiracy theory. Tweet in Spanish.

4 subs total for each team. I think England had only used two in regular time, so they can use their third regular one plus the extra one.
England v France final, why I want England to win.
Yeah, its a bit unclear if its a maximum of four or a fourth in ET.
BTW, is the Wimbledon final clashing with the WC Final?
So the whiners are wrong.
Did anyone else think the shot saved by Pickford that led to Colombia’s equalising corner may have been going wide anyway? There was such pandemonium after it that I don’t think they ever showed a replay? Not that I blame Pickford if that was the case, of course. Was a bit of a lucky goal off the corner anyway - had Trippier managed to raise his feet off the ground, he probably would have cleared it.
I absolutely agree with you about Beckham and I don’t underrate him, myself. He carried England to more than one World Cup/Euro finals (remember that last-minute free-kick against Greece in 2001, for example?). I just wanted to point out the Scholes was also a pass master. I can’t speak to the verifiability of the quotes here, but they give a flavour of how he was thought of by his peers.
Just quoting this again because I love it so much.
My take:
The ref did a terrible job, he never saw an English flop he didn’t like.
The theatre is alive and well in English football; Neymar has got nothing on those masters of the dive.
The english side is completely harmless outside set pieces.
PK practice works, good job on that.
Columbia needs to work on their theatrics and get their temper under control, they lost on professionalism.
I don’t think the Swedes will have much trouble.
